How To Change Your Auto’s Tire

May 31st, 2010 No comments

It is true that driving is a skill. It is an endless learning process even when you have already learned this skill. The fact is it definitely does not end there. What will you do in cases where you are driving and all of a sudden your tires run flat? Do you have any idea what the first step is? Do you already have the proper tools available?

You do not always have to depend on some kind-hearted personality to help you out. It is an advantage for every driver, regardless of gender, to recognize these tasks. After all, slips up will always come about and you need to find out what to do when it does.

First, here are the specific tools that you would need in changing your tires. It is highly recommended to always bring these tools in your trunk. A good spare tire is one among the primary stuff that you really should have in your trunk. Car jack– several would opt for hydraulic jacks since it is much easier to use compared to the jack that is produced by your car’s manufacturer. Tire wrench– this should match the size of your automobile’s tire nut. Last but not the least; you will also require a trouble light or flashlight, in case you would be adjusting your tires during night time. This would not be as difficult as what the people of Utah web design do.

Even so, you are now ready to change your vehicle’s tires. Set out to loosen your tire’s nut with the usage of your tire nut wrench. Do this in such manner that there is still adequate support from the nuts once the car is raised. After that, identify the spot beneath your vehicle’s chassis which is made to support your jack’s lift. Often you can obtain this at your auto’s manual. Pump the jack right until it reaches the right height that can match the tires without it having to reach the ground. Entirely loosen and take away your tire nuts one at a time and detach the flat tire to be changed.

Once the flat tire has been taken out, you can now look for the spare tire from your trunk. Put the spare tire back onto the wheel hub. Then, return the tire nuts one by one. Begin using the tire wrench to securely tighten up the nuts in to tire. Bring down your car gently right until the tires feel the floor. After that, you can now properly take out the jack. Lastly, just to be free from danger tighten each tire nut until you reach a certain point when it cannot go in any further.

Congratulations and good job! Your vehicle has a brand new working tire and is ready for action. The process is useful to all four sides of your tire. This new ability will offer you more flexibility and added security because you no longer need to ask for help from another person.

Mercedes-Benz ML55 Not For Me

May 31st, 2010 No comments

The ML55′s engine isn’t exactly the same as in the E55 and CLK55. With 255kW, maximum power is five fewer – an inevitable consequence of the reshaping of the engine’s torque curve.

Weight is the obvious reason for the engine alterations. The ML, with its separate ladder-frame chassis and steel body, is a chubby thing even before it’s stuffed with all the comfort; safety and impress-the-neighbors. Monstrous tyres also contribute a hefty number of kilograms to a kerb weight that’s well beyond two tonnes.

The consequences of mass are inescapable. In the E55, AMG’s V8 feels invincibly effective. Its sends the car towards the horizon with irresistible force. The several hundred additional kilos of the ML55 make a big difference. Absurdly fast for a 4WD, yes. But awesome its not.

Drive the ML55 with anything like exuberance and you begin to wonder about the wisdom of endowing a 4WD with this much performance. AMG’s expertise in making cars handle, steer and brake is considerable. But doing the business on a 4WD appears to be beyond their ability.

Even with the whopper Dunlops doing their best, the ML55 doesn’t respond to the steering with anything gratifying immediacy. There’s a fair amount of under-steer as the rubber struggles to persuade two tonnes to alter course. Further under-steer is almost certain if a speedy exit is sought from tight corners. In this situation the ML55′s standard electronic stability system will seek to prevent the situation deteriorating. But while the ESP operates with commendable subtlety in the similarly equipped E55, its activity in the ML55 is annoyingly jerky as it seeks to curb under-steer by cutting the production of torque. It operates with all of the finesse of a cab driver. None.

The ML55′s brakes are impressive. There’s a lot of room inside the 18in wheels, and in this case its pretty much filled with Brake Disc.

Anyone who expects a driving experience from the ML55 that’s truly special is sure to be disappointed. That said, there’s something both majestically impressive and quite novel about a 4WD that’s can do what the ML55 does. But a fast and above averagely agile elephant remains an elephant, no matter what.

What’s amazing is that there are many people who find such a creature to their taste. But its not for me.

Simple Ways To Understand Car Value Vs. Price

May 30th, 2010 No comments

Almost all of the car dealerships in Houston push the cost of a vehicle as the selling point of a particular vehicle. The gimmick is simple, they place the Manufacture Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) on the window of the car to make it seem more expensive than it is. The MSRP is a suggestion but also a deception, be careful when a dealer claims he’s saving you money by showing you this price.

Car dealerships in Houston will then use the “buffer” they have on the price to fool you, making you feel special when they lessen it by a few thousand dollars, but if you finance the vehicle and have little or no credit, you will end up paying close to if not the entire sticker price.

The right way to shop for a car is to breakdown the value of what it’s worth over its’ lifetime. This is done simply by calculating the your price for the car today, then adding all of the maintenance fees you’ll pay over the next few years. For example, let’s say you buy a 2002 Honda Civic ES with 65,000 miles for $10,750

You have to factor in the cost of repairs. We can estimate this based on the health of the vehicle. Categories that measure a vehicle’s health are: engine components (such as the motor, radiator, alternator, air filter, battery, etc); tires, exterior components like windshield wipers, headlights, taillights, suspension, brakes.

If the vehicle is in “okay” condition, then it’s very likely you would spend about $3000 in repairs over a 4 year period with out any unreasonable factors increasing the chance of breakdown. That means the value of the car is only $3,500 over a four year period. To simplify, if you bought a vehicle for $9,000 and it had little to no repairs in a 4 year period, you would be getting a better investment for your money.

The main reason why car customers are unhappy with their purchase, is when they shop with only price as the consideration of the deal. If you learn about value and cost of repairs, even researching the types of cars that hold their worth over time, then you too will be a satisfied car shopper!

Going To The Best Car Dealerships

May 30th, 2010 No comments

There are places all around the country where you can find cars. But how do you find these places. One of them is the many car dealerships scattered about the country. Some of these dealerships are located in small towns, but most of them are in the great big cities and very rural areas of the country.

Buying a car can be one of the most important parts of any persons life. It requires a lot of thought and a lot of money in order to be done correctly and safely. By safely, it is meant that doing this should be done after it is thought about so that you will not default on your loan payments or buy a lemon car.

Lemon is a term that generally refers to a car that is bought and always has something wrong with it. It does not matter if the radiator is bad or if attachments keep falling off. There are many ways a car can be a lemon, and when buying a used car, these cars should be watched out for. They are just money traps and the owner only wants to get rid of it.

There are many ways to tell if a car will be a lemon or not, but buying a car from a safe source is by far the best way of knowing. A dealership cannot sell a bad car because it will hurt their reputation and could be grounds for a lawsuit. A person off the street will not have to worry about it because they could disappear if they wished and never have to deal with the person they sold the lemon to.

This is why a dealership is the way to go when buying a new or used automobile. Finding a dealership near where you live will not be hard at all. You can ask your neighbors where they bought their cars. If they have lived in the house they are currently living in for a while, then there is a chance that they bought their car from a local dealer.

The internet is another great source for finding a car that you like and that will not break down on you. There are many dealerships that have online sites for their places of business. These are some of the best ones around.

While it is true that there are dealerships in very rural and largely unpopulated areas, most of the dealerships in the country are located in urban centers. This ensures customers because there are many more potential customers from a larger populations. Giant cities and urban centers such as Toronto and Vancouver house hundreds upon hundreds of dealerships.

Finding a car that fits your needs can feel great, especially if it is not a lemon. Car dealerships are the safest places to go for finding great used and new cars. There are many places to get these addresses and they should be sought out immediately.

Looking to lease a car or inspect your automobile for any possible repairs? Then contact your local dealership to receive the answer to your automotive problems!

First thing that will be a disadvantage to a dealership is the expense that will be related. It is not a secret that dealerships are looking to make the most off of your misfortune when it comes to a car.

The other drawback to getting your car repaired at a dealership or any other place, is that you can have a hard time finding a place that will fix your car properly and will not charge more than what is needed to be charged for the repairs.

If spending a small fortune is not appealing to you, then consider fixing your car yourself. This may come across as a wild concept, but there is a lot of logic that goes with it. The joy of working on a car that you love is one that can not be expressed. There is no better joy than digging your hands into the engine compartment and repairing your car.

Repairs to your vehicle are easy things which you can do with a simple tool set and an auto manual from your local auto parts store. Is The Time For The Rise Of The Electric Car?

May 29th, 2010 No comments

A new trend of living is unfolding on this world. Challenges that seem to overwhelm current solutions are drawing on concept and imagination.

Fossil fuel has provided a great source of innovation that virtually defined the 20th century. Suburbia, roads, and a way of life in many ways liberated from the distance came with our car. But so did a lot of other things. Fossil fuels can not be exhausted. When the car was first built and designed, fossil fuels virtually no value and is the perfect solution for energy sources that were plentiful, cheap, simple and accessible.

I remember taking trips when I was a child and when we entered the state of Texas we began counting countless oil wells. Who would have thought at that time that we would run out of this unlimited resource and consecrate what has been coined by James falcon as ‘the greatest change of wealth’ in the history of mankind.

The dinosaur is dead and a new day is dawning.

What’s so particular about electric cars is that for all the promise of clean, renewable energy, there is now a practical answer, for the special demands this kind of car does have.

Manufacturers have identified that most urban work travel is less than 100 miles, that the ability of electric car meets the needs of the typical driver in the United States and the industrial world.

Alike any technology that receives the focus of the scientific economic natives, the capability and possibilities for a lithium-ion battery is increasing regularly. Use of silicon instead of graphite allows much additional energy to be stored as the silicon absorbs larger amounts of lithium in the charging process If you watch the progress of the size of computer storage memory capacity in an industry driven by demand, it is clear that when the electric car is a viable choice for consumers, these same types of advances can provide answers to the need and the market. Lithium-ion batteries can be recycled with minimal environmental impact. About 95% of battery materials can be cured.

When we met with electricity, fuel resource has been here, the funds to stay here, and manufacturing resources are produced here, the tax revenue our government in trouble will stay here. The dawn of a new day may be the inspiration of our founding fathers more powerful, independence and autonomy begins.

How To Look For Tire Dealers

May 28th, 2010 No comments

If you have a car, you need to find good tire dealers. It goes without saying that your tires are a major factor that can give you a favorable and safe driving experience. You should therefore aim to find only the best dealers. Here are some things that you should look for in dealers.

Comprehensive Website

Most reputable business now have websites. Having a business website doesn’t just increase a business’ client base. It also offers greater convenience for clients themselves. The tire dealer of your choice should therefore have its own active website.

Tire dealers should be able to provide you with complete or comprehensive details on the various tires. Since tires aren’t the only part of your car, it would also help if your tire dealer also sells other car parts and is also an expert at it. A good dealer website should offer good information about cars in general and driving under specific conditions.

Tire dealership sites must also be able to provide their customers with access to independent tire reviews. This can help other would-be clients to determine the best tires for their particular use.

Quality Products and Services

Reputable tire dealers shouldn’t just sell any tire from just any manufacturer. You need a tire dealer who will take great lengths to look for tire manufacturers who only offer quality tire products. This is an extra service that will ensure consumers that they get the best kind of tires no matter which brand they choose. A good dealer should also go out of the way to offer other options to consumers such as installation and installer options.

Expert People

Employees and staffs must know much about the tires their dealing with. They are after all, the heart and soul of the dealership. Knowledgeable employees need to be able to pick the right tires for clients based on relevant factors. This increases not just consumer satisfaction but safety as well. Reputable dealers ensure that they have capable employees by offering employee training opportunities.

Wide Selection

Nothing can be as frustrating as approaching a tire dealer and not finding what you want or being restricted in your choice. A tire dealer should ideally have a wide array of selections for customers to choose from. This will allow clients to choose tires according to the appropriate size, kind of vehicle, driving style and driving conditions. Dealers should have full stocks to offer clients.

Customer Service

One of the most important traits that a tire dealer should have is excellent customer service. Although the customer may not always be right, they do have the right to be offered and given everything that they will ever need. This includes on hand assistance, comprehensive product information and warranty details.

Looking for the right tire dealer for your car needs may take some time. In the long run though, this will definitely work to your advantage. The right dealer can help ensure your satisfaction and driving safety.

4 Ways To Remove The Risk Out Of Buying A Car

May 28th, 2010 No comments

1. Do your homework. Doing your part to know what you want is most important. Reading reviews on the car, consumer reports, asking friends and colleagues, knowing gas mileage, will give you the power to make a good car purchase. Be sure and determine maintenance cost and upkeep. Trying to narrow your car search to two models is ideal. Knowing what you want is key. You don’t want to walk out of a dealership with a car you are feeling OK about. You need to be happy with your purchase. Limiting your search to two models will enable you the time to be able to do much more effective comparisons of each car.

2. Check your vehicle’s history records. This will help you to eliminate half of the vehicles from your list without potential problems. Vehicles that have been flooded or sustained a major accident of any kind can be removed. Most car dealerships in Houston TX might shy away from giving you this information. In fact, it’s not a good idea to look into a car unless you have looked into its history FIRST. Don’t just check one source. Carfax is a good place to start but it doesn’t always supply all the information. Have the dealer or owner also pull up a report from autocheck (www.autocheck.com) Nexcar will reimburse you when you purchase a car if you bring your receipt to show us you used AutoCheck*

3. Do not always buy on what you’ve been told. It’s not always true. Try to get an experienced or knowledgeable person to go with you to the dealership. Or take the car to a mechanic you trust for an inspection. NEVER give a deposit or sign a contract before the car is checked out.

4. BE VERY CAREFUL DOING THE PAPERWORK. For example if you are choosing not to buy a car from any of the car dealerships and going with a private owner, make sure there are no registered liens against the vehicle and that the person who signs the Bill of Sale actually owns the car. Check with the Vehicle Registration Authorities to make sure the car has not been stolen. If buying from a dealer, read the warranty policy and all the papers including the fine print. If it is a “Certified” used car, you’d be wise to check exactly what items were checked off and approved. Cars that have been in accidents in the past sometimes slip through as Certified used cars. Whatever is promised, get it all in writing. Find out if the original warranty will be transferred into your name. All Manufactures have different warranty policies.

Sticking to these principles before buying a car will ensure you end up with a car you can trust.

Discover How To Remove The Rear Shock From A Lincoln Town Car!

May 28th, 2010 No comments

The Lincoln Town Car’s air suspension uses a small, separate air compressor under the driver’s side left fender well, with air lines running to the air bags. On the top of each air bag is a electrical valve. This is a relief valve that allows air to be exhausted when activated, and which senses the amount of air pressure within the air bag to keep both sides equal.

These valves are operated via a leveling sensor that is attached to the body of the car and to the rear axle by a movable arm. When the rear of the car drops due to increased load, the arm is pushed up. When the arm is pushed up, it turns on the air compressor and fills the air bags to level the car. When the load is removed and the arm moves down, indicating that the back of the car has risen, the sensor opens the valve on the air bags and allows air to escape, lowering the car.

If the back of the car is low, indicating that the air suspension is not working, and the air suspension light is on, check the fuse first. If the fuse is all right, check the air suspension switch in the trunk and make sure it is on. This switch is used when the car is in for service. Always turn off the switch before lifting the car, because the sensor will think the car is rising and keep the air bag valves open, ruining the rear air suspension.

Turn the ignition key with the engine off. Listen for the compressor to come on while pushing down on the rear bumper. If it does not come on, test the switch terminals for power, using a circuit tester. If one terminal has power and the other does not, replace the switch. If there is power, turn the switch to the off position, raise the vehicle and place it on jack stands in the rear. Inspect the leveling switch on the axle, making sure it is not bent and is connected. Use an ohmmeter for this test. Pull the electrical connector off the switch.

Loosen the arm of the switch from the axle. Test the switch with the ohmmeter by checking across both terminals while slowly moving the arm. There should be no continuity with the arm down. As the arm is raised, there should be continuity. If not, replace the switch. If there was continuity, connect the arm and the electrical connector.

Put a floor jack under the axle and raise the axle to the point where it is just beginning to lift the car off the jack stand. Turn on the ignition. Turn the air suspension switch to the “on” position. Use the circuit tester to check for power at the leveling switch. If there is power, turn the air suspension switch to “off” and lower the car. Access the air compressor in the front, under the hood, and check the electrical connector for power. If there is power, check for a good ground. If both are good, replace the compressor. If the compressor works and the car does not rise in the back, replace the air bags.

Volcanoes Are Not An Issue For Caravan Lovers

May 27th, 2010 No comments

Caravan owners everywhere are breathing a somewhat smug sigh of relief as they, unlike plane-hopping holiday makers, are not having to frantically check their insurance documents to see if they are covered for disruption caused by ash from a far away volcano.

It was an extremely satisfying feeling, pulling my caravan home under clear, aeroplane-free skies and not worrying in the slightest about whether my insurance covered me against volcanic eruptions happening in far off countries. As a caravan lover, I felt vindicated. The next time someone says that towing caravans is slow and holds up the roads, remind them of the time back in Easter 2010 when a caravan could get from anywhere in Europe, to nearly anywhere else in Europe faster than the average plane.

Also, the “cramped and claustrophobic” conditions that so many people associate caravans with seemed like the most luxurious and spacious of interiors compared to a hotel lobby or a space on an airport floor.

This is all, of course irrelevant within the caravan community; we like our holidays and you like yours. How tedious would the world be if we all liked the same things? However the reason for the somewhat smug nature of this article is that those who are not into caravanning often tend to poke fun at our choice of holiday, while we rarely, if ever, do the same to them.

So… given that we didn’t have quite the same concerns this Easter that many other holiday makers had, what were we thinking about? I’d like to hear some good stories. I wasn’t thinking about whether my insurance covered me for all those untold additional costs that the plane brigade were worried about, but I did have some additional costs to think about. And they were costs that I couldn’t insure against too.

I took the a copy of Caravan Magazine with me on my holiday because we were thinking about buying a new one, and so had intended to browse over potential new purchases, but I ended up becoming engrossed in the insurance survey. It seems that because I never went to a broker to get my caravan insurance, I over paid for it – by a considerable amount. So if you’re in need of cheap caravan insurance it is well worth shopping around because there were lots of price comparisons in Caravan Magazine, some of which were quite surprising and are well worth a look into.

If you are looking for caravan insurance, but want to make sure you get the best deal, you should visit Coversure. They are an insurance broker with long-standing relationships with providers and can always secure a great deal on static caravan insurance or touring caravan insurance.

How To Get Great Car Care Products Online

May 27th, 2010 No comments

As the United States comes out of the last great recession we went through more and more people who are looking for outstanding car care products are turning to the Internet. There’s a reason that people who want the best car accessories turn to the Web and first and foremost is the convenience the online experience offers.

When you take a look you can see that there are many different online retailers on the Internet and some of course are better than others at providing customers with the best detailed products. There are several things that you need to look for so that you can get the best deal on these products.

Make sure to look for:

* testimonials that tell you the online retailer you are looking at is professional. When you can find a place that has testimonials from past satisfied clients you can rest assured that they are the kind of company that will provide you with good car care products.

* All the latest. When you’re dealing with an online retailer there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to get all the latest products displayed on the website. Make sure to look for a tab that tells you where to go.

* A great customer service department. It’s important to remember that you need a good customer service department that has more than just an e-mail address. You need a telephone number as well. The better a company is the more transparent they are and willing to answer any and all of your questions about the car care products that they carry.

One of the other things that you’ll need to look at is the kind of shipping department at the online retailer has. Remember that a company can have all the best car care products possible but if they don’t have a way to ship them in pristine shape right to your front door there isn’t much point in continuing a business relationship.

One of the first things that you need to look at to make sure you’re dealing with an outstanding online retailer is the customer service department and shipping department. Even though business is on the Internet today, there are still some old-fashioned ways of doing things and getting the services that you need. Customer care and shipping are still vital to good business.

Charlie Arnold understands that the best car care products can be found online. He knows that the Internet supplies outstanding car accessories.

Pristine New Car Or Cheap Used Car?

May 27th, 2010 No comments

A brand new automobile is a wonderful thing. There are no dings, no places where the paint was patched up, no smell of something that was spilled months ago – it’s unspoiled inside and out. Is a pre-owned car a better deal, or should you treat yourself and get a car brand new at your local car dealer? Each option has benefits and drawbacks.

Used cars carry much easier to afford price tags. In fact, a brand new car loses a high percentage of its value the minute it leaves the car dealer’s lot. A new car is still new a week after you’ve bought it it. It still has a lot of use left, no scratches and it still smells new. But if you were to try to sell it, it isn’t a brand new car anymore, and that difference translates into dollars. You would suppose that the value of a car would fall little by little over its useful life, but that’s not how it works. A car’s few months and years see a disproportionate loss of value. Ultimately, the price stabilizes and its value is determined solely by its condition – but it still has some value.

One of the largest drawbacks to buying a previously owned car is the unknown. Why did its first owner get rid of it? Does it break down a lot? How well was it cared for? Was the suggested maintenance performed in a timely manner? Has it been wrecked and repaired, or has it had flood damage? The good news is that it’s much simpler to find out the answer to these questions that it ever has been. A Carfax report tells you the car’s history, and many dealers offer them at their expense. Has it been involved in any wrecks? How many owners has it had? Cars can be tracked by their vin numbers and now that computer records have improved, it’s much easier to compile this information.

A used car probably won’t last as long as new car would, and that’s a another drawback. It will require repair and maintenance sooner. The age of a used car plays a big role in this factor. Some previously owned cars are still new enough to be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. In fact, several car dealers sell ‘certified used vehicles’. This means that they have inspected the car, done any necessary maintenance and repairs, and determined that it meets certain quality guidelines. You won’t have to worry about major repairs for a period of time if you buy a car that comes with a warranty. If a used car does not come with a warranty, the key is to have your mechanic look it over before you buy it. Compare the condition of the car to its price. A lower price is the prize for accepting a car with some problems. Of course, there is a limit. A car that’s about to expire isn’t worth any money at all – except to the junkyard.

New cars are expensive – that’s the bad news. There are some benefits too. First, a car built today will last longer than a car built even a few years ago, because engineering is improving so quickly. Also, if a new model that you like has just come out, you won’t be able to find a used one. Infiniti’s G37 Convertible is a good example. If you can find a used one, it’s probably at a premium price for a used car. You might be better off just to buy it new.

Ultimately, buying used or new is a personal decision. It will probably depend a lot on the type of car you’re looking for. Whichever route you choose, do your homework and consider both options before you make your choice.

A Woman’s Guide To Changing A Tire

May 26th, 2010 No comments

If, or rather when, you get a flat tire you need to know what to do. It can be particularly scary and frustrating to women who have little experience changing a tire. This article is a step by step guide on how to do it. The first step is to be safe. If you have roadside assistance and a cell phone, give them a call.

Then put the hood up and sit in the passenger seat as it looks like you have someone else that went for help and would be right back. Once roadside assistance arrives they will change the flat tire in very little time. If you don’t have roadside assistance you can try to call your Utah auto repair shop or someone who can help you.

If you don’t have the option of calling for some help then you need to bite the bullet and change the tire. Make sure you have all the tools that you need for changing a tire already in your car. It’s also good to have some hand wipes because you’re going to get dirty.

It is especially important to read about where you need to put the jack on your vehicle. If you put it in the wrong spot it will damage your vehicle. Before you begin make sure to carefully pull the vehicle off the road to a safe place. It should be a level patch of ground that isn’t too close to traffic. You can sometimes damage the wheel by driving with a flat, but your Utah auto repair shop can fix it, and safety is the priority. You need to set your parking brake and secure the tires with blocks or you can use a few big rocks.

If you’re changing a front tire put them in front and behind the back two tires and if you’re changing a back tire put them in front and in back of the two front tires. Use a screw driver to pry off the wheel cover if you have one. Place the lug nut wrench on a lug nut so that it points straight out to your left.

Put the jack in position now and raise the tire about 2 inches off of the ground. Unscrew the lug nuts all the way and take the tire off. Now put the spare tire on.

Screw the lug nuts in by hand just a few turns. The tapered end of the lug nut needs to be facing the tire. Lower the jack and move it out of the way. Now finish tightening the lug nuts. Be sure they are tight enough by stomping on the lug nut wrench while it’s positioned out to the right.

Take your tire to your nearest Utah automotive repair shop so they can repair the hole. With some knowledge and a little practice you can feel confident in your ability to change a flat tire.

Identifying And Resolving A Blown Head Gasket

May 26th, 2010 No comments

Your car’s engine block and cylinder head are separated by a thin component called the head gasket (HG). It has two main purposes. First, it is responsible for creating a tight seal that ensures the pressure within each of the cylinders is uncompromised. Second, it prevents coolant and oil from leaking into the cylinders.

If the HG is unable to perform either job, you will experience problems while driving. For example, insufficient compression within any of the cylinders will cause misfiring and hesitation while accelerating. On the other hand, if coolant or oil leak into a cylinder, your engine will overheat.

Head gaskets can fail for a few reasons, which we’ll explore in more detail below. It’s worth noting that the factors that lead to their failure do not necessarily suggest a particular root cause. With this in mind, we’ll take a look at the most common issues that impact the component.

Factors That Lead To Head Gasket Failure

One of the problems with today’s engines is that the material used to construct the cylinder head and block are different. The heads are typically built out of aluminum. The blocks are built out of iron. The advantage of aluminum heads is that they’re lighter, which improves fuel efficiency. The downside is that the material expands more quickly than iron under heat. This has a direct impact on your head gasket.

While you’re driving, your engine is operating at high temperatures. The oil and coolant coursing through your car’s cooling system is helping to control the heat, but the temperature remains high during operation. Because the aluminum head and cast iron block expand at different rates, they cause rubbing on the HG, which sits between them. Over time, the constant rubbing causes the component to deteriorate.

Another problem – unrelated to metal stress – involves poor installation. Bolts keep this part secured against the engine block. When these bolts are tightened inappropriately, or they’re compromised from corrosion and minor damage, the seal becomes weakened. The resulting slack allows the component to suffer rubbing between the block and cylinder head, which leads to deterioration.

What Is The Root Cause Behind The Component’s Failure?

The two most common reasons head gaskets are placed under stress are overheating in the engine and detonation. When your engine overheats, it causes the cylinder head and block to expand, as described earlier. The problem is, there are many potential issues that can cause the assembly to overheat. For example, the problem could be caused by a leaking water pump, clogged radiator, or a lack of oil.

If your mechanic simply replaces the head gasket without resolving the root cause of the original part’s failure, the replacement will also fail. Given that labor and parts may cost several hundreds of dollars, the underlying issue must first be fixed.

Detonation occurs when the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder pre-ignites (i.e. it ignites before the spark plug has a chance to fire). The early ignition causes the piston to slam against the walls of the cylinder. This causes a knocking sound and can eventually destroy the piston, leading to the head gasket’s failure.

This problem can occur for a few reasons. First, the air-fuel mixture within one of the cylinders may be too lean. Second, the exhaust gas recirculation system might malfunction. Third, the firing of the spark plug may be timed poorly. As with an overheating engine, the cause of the detonation must be identified and resolved prior to a replacement head gasket being installed. Otherwise, the replacement will fail – if your engine doesn’t fail first.

Head gaskets are one of those critical car parts that should be replaced with an OEM-certified component. Spend a few extra dollars to avoid a future HG failure due to poor quality.
