Nissan Patrol TDi 2000

May 7th, 2010 No comments

There’s no trying to hide your impact on the environment if you’re going to drive a car that tips the scales on the wrong side of two tonnes

To put that in perspective, you could stack the entire Essendon grand final run-on team on the other side of the scales, and still have room for the interchange bench and coaching staff. Heavy, man!

So it takes a mighty powerful engine to push this lump of metal up a track, either in Boggabri or Bondi. Nissan’s plumped for a new turbocharged 3.0 litre four cylinder diesel engine in this case, mated to a heavy duty five speed manual gearbox, or a four speed automatic. We tried the auto version.

Unlike the overhead valve 4.2 litre six cylinder in the other diesel Patrols, this engine has two overhead camshafts acting on four valves per cylinder. It also features Nissan’s M-fire combustion system. In all, the 3.0 litre engine develops 116kW at 3600rpm and 354Nm at 2000rpm, which are power and torque increases of 22 per cent and 40 per cent respectively over the old RD28T engine.

To get a really thorough evaluation we packed the back full of camping supplies and headed to the Grampians for an extended three day weekend.

Packing the vehicle is made incredibly easy by the clever way the rear seats fold up to the side and out of the way. Three days’ equipment and food for four fit comfortably in the back without impinging on the drivers’ rearward view in any way.

Up front, the Nissan Patrol ST more than satisfied our need for luxuries with a CD player and electric windows and mirrors. The cabin has impressive levels of sound deadening, with only the muted thrum of the hard working diesel engine to let you know you’re on the move.

And it’s a relatively slow move at that. There’s no characterising this vehicle as a wind-in-the-hair car, no matter what that innovative TV advertisement tries to tell us. Life with a Nissan Patrol is a lethargic affair, as the 116 kiloWatt 3.0 litre intercooled turbodiesel pushes the Patrol down the road.

Acceleration is adequate, though hardly insipiring. On road the Patrol managed to chugg along at a comfortable 110km/h without any distress, and it accomplished everything we asked in the Grampians with no fuss. Muddy tracks, hillclimbs, river crossings – it didn’t matter, the Patrol shrugged a shoulder and traversed the obstacle with barely a pause.

We were pleasantly surprised by the diesel Patrol’s frugal ways at the fuel bowser, too. We fully expected to be walloped in the wallet – a payback for the fun we’d had – but the Patrol averaged around 7-8km per litre.
