Why buy a hybrid?
When deliberating about which new car to buy, it’s often difficult for the person spending the money to see why it’s worth spending out extra for a hybrid car. Of course, they have a reputation for being better for the environment than conventional cars, but hybrids have an extra premium on the price tag compared to conventional cars. Yet while every new car offers reliability and trouble free motoring, a hybrid can offer years of lower running costs that will easily make up the difference in the initial investment.
The running costs you will save on with a hybrid are not just lower fuel bills. You’ll also pay less road tax as the carbon dioxide emissions are low, so the car falls into a lower road tax band. And if you drive into London, you’ll also be exempt from the Congestion Charge.
Another good reason to choose a hybrid is for the sake of the environment. More hybrids are becoming available as plug-in hybrids, meaning that the electric motor does more of the work and these models can travel a longer distance in all electric mode – during which time the tailpipe emissions are minimal to zero. A petrol-hybrid car will produce 25% fewer greenhouse gases during its lifetime.
It may be that in a few years’ time all cars have to be hybrid – so if you’re ready to buy a new car now, then you may as well be ahead of the game and avoid costly conversions later down the line.
It’s simple to drive a hybrid. There’s nothing new to learn and the only refuelling you have to do is the kind you’re used to – topping up the petrol tank. It’s not like using biogas or natural gas – you just go to a standard petrol station, there’s nothing complicated about owning a hybrid. In fact, you might find it needs less servicing than a conventional car, as the engine works a lot less hard.
