Honda shows off in Tokyo

January 16th, 2012 No comments

If December’s Tokyo Motor Show is anything to go by, then it won’t be too long before we’ll all be driving around in cars that look a little like the business end of a Dyson vacuum cleaner!

The Micro Commuter vehicle being displayed by Honda at the Tokyo Motor Show really does look weirdly wonderful to our eyes today, but could well be a taste of things to come. That is, after all, the role of the really big motor shows around the world – and perhaps none more so than in Tokyo.

The Micro Commuter car really is the cutting edge of world eco cars. It’s a tiny three-seater all-electric vehicle with a top speed of just 37 mph and a range of just 37 miles and a tiny electric bike in the boot.

But if you live in Tokyo or some other mega city of today – then perhaps this is the car of tomorrow? After all, it’s only a matter of time before recharging stations pop up all over the place for electric cars, and it’s also inevitable that electric cars will charge quicker – and have superior battery technology than they do today. So whilst this particular car may not get beyond the stage of a concept vehicle – something very like it almost inevitably will – and it will probably be very soon.

Car technology is changing more quickly today than at any time for over a century. And it isn’t just in the way the cars are propelled (though that is the main change). For example, Honda’s micro commuter concept includes “twin lever steering” which uses the driver’s natural arm movements to control steering.

Meanwhile, the car’s body has interchangeable colorful panels which completely cover the wheels both safety reasons and to enhance aerodynamics.

So be prepared to embrace the micro car future; like it or not!

Which hybrid?

January 6th, 2012 No comments

If you asked most people about hybrid cars, I bet you would hear the majority view that this is a relatively recent motoring phenomenon, which has yet to really take hold.

And there would be a fair degree of truth in that view – but with one notable exception. And that’s the Honda Insight.

This is because the Honda Insight as now been around for an amazing 13 years. It hardly seems possible. But then Honda has pioneered green motoring technology more than any other carmaker. In fact, the Honda 2000 Insight ranked as the single most efficient US EPA-certified petrol-fuelled car of all time.

When you add to this kind of record the fact that Honda was voted the UK’s most reliable car manufacturer for an unprecedented six years in a row by the What Car? and Warranty Direct reliability study, then the choice of best hybrid has to be the Insight for my money. After all – you’re on the safest of possible ground given the longevity of the vehicle (which is now in its second generation) and Honda’s overall reputation for objectively tested reliability.

In the UK, though, the Insight has only been on sale since 2009, but it has outsold most of its major UK competitors by some distance and is, of course, completely exempt from the London congestion zone charge.

For around £15,000 the new Insight is a great deal. A lot of technology is packed into the vehicle, including Honda’s ‘Integrated Motor Assist’ drive-train which puts together an 88bhp 1.3-litre 8-valve VTEC petrol engine with a 13bhp electric motor. And there are always good new car offers around on the Insight as the competition from other models is pretty fierce.

There are also an increasing number of used models coming onto the market which is something of a cheap motoring “no-brainer” given Honda’s reputation for reliability.

The all-new Honda Civic 2012

December 23rd, 2011 No comments

Honda has redesigned its trademark model the Civic for its ninth generation 2012 model.  Although it’s not greatly changed from the eighth generation, which was futuristic compared to the previous generation, Honda has tweaked the 2012 Civic and filled out the shape a little more.

You can now get the new honda civic 2012 in seven models: coupé, Si sedan, sedan, Si coupé, hybrid, natural gas and high fuel-efficiency. If you’re looking for power, the Si has the most, with a 2.4 litre engine that can produce 200 horsepower and 170 pounds per foot of torque.

There’s a 1.8 litre four cylinder engine with 140 horsepower in the high fuel-efficiency, the sedan, the natural gas and the coupé models.

The 2012 Civic Natural Gas was made Green Car of the Year at the LA Auto Show this year. Natural gas is domestically sourced in the States and costs drivers a third less than petrol.

Critics are wondering if Honda has made the right move in not changing the Civic very much from the previous generation, but Honda wanted the Civic to retain its instantly recognisable shape.

The trim levels vary depending on the models, with the most basic coming without radio or air conditioning.

Across the board, fuel efficiency has been improved, from 31 miles per gallon for the Civic Si to the hybrid’s 44 miles per gallon. The high fuel-efficiency model gets 29 miles per gallon in the city and 41 miles per gallon on the highway.  However, critics say that some of the Civic’s main competitors are equal on fuel economy at a lower price.

For example, the Hyundai Elantra and Chevrolet Cruze offer the same fuel economy ratings, but aren’t as expensive.  And where the Civic models all have only five speed manual or automatic transmission, apart from the high performance Si, its competitors have six speed transmissions, which improve performance.

So, while the Honda Civic 2012 will appeal to loyal Civic aficionados, it may not be enough of a pull to attract potential new buyers comparing like for like, and allowing cost to make the final decision.

The New Honda Civic Will Soon Be Here

December 13th, 2011 No comments

One of the world’s most iconic and successful cars is coming back with a brand new version. The latest Honda Civic Hatchback for the European market was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show and the latest version of the car to which Honda owes its fortunes more than any other doesn’t let the marque down.

Quite simply, the new Civic’s design is stunning. It’s still clearly a Civic. If you put it next to a Civic from 25 years ago, you’d be able to say, unequivocally, that the DNA is intact; the genetics of the new car are there for all to see. But somehow, it manages to stay true to this design whilst offering something completely different.

The car’s wide and low stance looks both beautiful and powerful. It looks like a car that could never leave the road no matter how hard the driver tried.

Civic buyers will be able to choose between three engine options – a 1.4-litre petrol engine, a 1.8-litre petrol or a 2.2-litre diesel engine version. Whether the new cars will be sufficient to meet the requirements of eco cars UK drivers are increasingly after, though, remains to be seen. There are no hybrid versions of the new Civic as yet.

The initial plan is for all three versions of the Civic to be available with a six-speed manual gear box, whilst the 1.8-litre version will also be available with a specially prepared five-speed transmission option.

Like all new Hondas, the new Civic Hatchback is a safety-conscious vehicle. Each Civic features stability control, six air-bags and active anti-whiplash front head restraints as standard; there are also energy-absorbing wing mounts, and the windscreen wiper pivots are designed to break away on impact.

Get ready for winter

November 24th, 2011 No comments

Did you know that the most common cause of breakdown in winter is battery failure? It seems so weird that this happens to so many cars and causes motorists so much misery each year when it’s also so easily avoidable.

Give your battery terminals a bit of a clean then get it down to pretty much any outlet that supplies car batteries – or any mechanic and get the thing tested. And if you need a new one – get your hand in your pocket and buy one. Batteries are one of the few things on cars these days that don’t cost an arm and a leg; and when you think of the hassle a new one saves you, it’s definitely worth the small expense.

If you’re at all worried about your battery – always carry a set of jump leads.

Now give your car a good clean and wax polish – particularly around its lowest points; the underside of the sills, the base of the doors, and the wheel arches; these are the areas that get the most punished by salt when the roads are gritted for winter ice, so it’s worth blast washing them and treating them with a wax oil mix as well.

Also – double check your radiator’s anti-freeze level. If you’re in any doubt at all, top it up. Too much anti-freeze in your radiator won’t cause a problem; but too little most certainly will.

Of course, the best way to get an easy ride in the winter months is to get a quality car in the first place. Honda cars have an excellent reputation for reliability, durability and they hold their second hand value remarkably well.

In addition, if your car is a Honda, it is less likely to break down due to generalised mechanical failure. This goes for a few other manufacturers as well and isn’t a matter of opinion so much as statistical fact.

Finally, keep a shovel and a sleeping bag in the boot and when you’re going on long journeys, take some food and a flask of soup or a hot drink – just in case. Happy winter motoring!

Three reasons to drive a hybrid

November 14th, 2011 No comments

Although many people like the concept of owning hybrids, there is a premium to pay when you’re buying new, in comparison to conventional cars.  Sometimes it can be difficult to look beyond the ticket price and see why it makes more sense to pay more.

However, doing so will save you money many times over during the lifetime of the car.  It will also mean that you are reducing your impact on the environment.

Here are three reasons to pay the difference and own a hybrid:

  1. Lower emissions

Driving a low emissions car like a hybrid means that you will be making a sensible choice for the environment as well as your wallet.  With ever tighter restrictions on air quality, it makes sense to buy a car that falls well within the permissible levels of emissions, as they are only going to get lower as time goes on. So buying a hybrid now may save you the cost of having to convert your car’s engine a few years down the line.

  1. Lower running costs

By driving a hybrid you will save on fuel.  This is because hybrid cars have a dual power source – an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The electric motor is powered by its own battery that is recharged as the car moves along by a process called regenerative braking.  Because the electric motor takes the strain off the engine during acceleration, the engine burns less fuel.  This saves you money and reduces the amount of emissions the car produces – an added benefit for the environment.

In some countries, driving a hybrid car will reduce other running costs. For example, many eco cars UK drivers qualify for lower road tax and can be exempt from the London Congestion Charge, which can save commuters up to £2,000 a year.

  1. Hybrids are simple

You don’t have to learn anything new to drive a hybrid – it’s just like driving a conventional car.  You also won’t have any concerns about how to refuel as you might with biofuel, as they can be filled up at any gas station.

Honda Lift Kits That Are Priced Right

November 18th, 2010 No comments

Honda lift kits aren’t as much as you might think when you are raising your truck. Most kits can be installed in less than a day and have some terrific bonuses. One would be that you can put bigger tires on your vehicle.

The kits come with everything to set up your truck. Some of the instructions for the kits have extra steps. If you are familiar with vehicles or installing lift kits, then you may be able to skip some of the additional steps.

There are professionals that could handle the installation for you. You might end up spending more, but if you have not had experience, it could technically save you money and at the very least, a lot of hassle. Should you not be too interested in saving money on the cost of labor then locate a local installer. Otherwise, you are ready to start the installation yourself, try to have a buddy or two to help out.

Make sure you know what you are doing when you go to install the lift kit. Just because you think you know all about it, does not mean you actually do. Utilize the many resources available online, or enlist the help of a friend who has done this before. If you do not, and there is a problem, it could really hurt your wallet in repairs.

Finding an inexpensive kit isn’t that difficult. When you look around, you should be able to locate one that is reasonably priced. Make sure that you have all the tools you need before you start the job also. Having to add in the price of tools you might not have would raise the overall cost of the project.

Lift kits are a great way to increase performance on your car or truck. If you are looking to make it more of an off roading vehicle, think about installing larger wheels and tires in addition to the lift kit. You may be able to find a great deal on all of this together online. Many websites also offer free shipping when you spend a certain dollar amount, and the kit should easily fall into that category

Honda lift kits can be found across the internet. You should make it a two person job when you’re planning on doing it in your garage. Attempting to do it with only yourself could cause some serious problems. This is also not something you want to do when it can’t have your full attention. One wrong error caused by a distraction could cause damage to you or your vehicle.

The 2010 Honda Accord Is Practical And Reliable

September 14th, 2010 No comments

Without a doubt, the Accord is one of Honda’s most popular and instantly recognized automobiles. This family sedan is well known for its reliability, practicality and high resale value and competes head to head in the midsize car segment with another very well known vehicle, the Toyota Camry. The Accord is available as a four-door car and as a more athletic two-door coupe. The trims available for the sedan are the LX, LX-P, EX and X-L and the trims for the coupe models are LX-S, EX and EX-L. On the outside the Accord sports a very modern look and contemporary style with a sleek design.

Let’s take a more in-depth look at the engine. You can select from three different engines. The LX and LX-P utilize a V4 2.4 LTR engine with 177 hp and 161 lb of feet torque. The EX sedans and all of the coupe versions will be powered with 190 HP. The engine that runs the EX model is a V6 3.5 LTR with 271 HP and 254 lb feet of torque. The ride is firm and even a bit sporty for a family sedan; the steering wheel is precise and responsive and the vehicle handles pretty decent overall.

The Accord’s cabin space offers more room than ever. The back seats are noted for their spaciousness; there’s more than enough lower body and head rooms for three full-sized adults. Solid materials provide the interior with a modern and inviting look. The navigation system makes use a control knob which is located in the center of the dashboard. The only minor drawback is that cargo space for the sedan is a bit small at fourteen cubic feet.

Safety has been thoroughly addressed by engineers with the inclusion of a variety of advanced features. Vehicle Stability Assist adjusts pressure to the brakes in case of oversteer or understeer situations. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes aid in maintaining control during hard brakes. A Tire Pressure Monitoring system lets you know when pressure needs to be adjusted. The Accord was designed with an Advanced Compatibility Engineering structure which works to distributes the crash energy over a large area and away from occupants in the case of an accident. An air bag system consisting of front side, front and side curtain bags is in place and utilizes a clever Occupant Detection System to halt the bags from being activated if a small child is seated in order to avoid potential injury. During safety crash tests conducted by the IIHS, the 2010 Accord sedan garnered top points in frontal, side and rear impact crash testing.

The 2010 Honda Accord is an option to keep in mind when selecting a family sedan. Accords are acclaimed for their reliability and as a result retain their value during resale significantly. JD Power and Associates awarded it with 9 out of 10 on the coveted Predicted Reliability rating. MSRP for the 2010 Accord starts at approximately $21k which makes it an affordable choice for anyone looking for a vehicle that is practical and reliable.

Honda Hybrid Cars, The Top Choice!

May 8th, 2010 No comments

In this time of economic downturn, when the consumers are hit by inflation, unemployment, and are forced to a lower standard of living, it is wise to drive a hybrid car instead of the normal standard car. Hybrid cars have a lot more gasoline efficiency, and have much better mileage. These cars are also environmentally friendly, as they do not pollute the air as much by their engine emission.

Hybrid cars should be preferred more today, because of their fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly features. A token to encourage people to own hybrid cars has been announced by the United States government in the shape of parking slot fee exclusions for these cars. These hybrid cars are a good choice because today the world is falling short on its resources and also experiencing ever rising prices in fuel, therefore; a gasoline efficient car will prove to be god-send for both its owner and the community.

Hybrid cars are getting popular due to high scale marketing by many car manufacturers and marketing companies. The reason behind high scale marketing is that the hybrid car category is in its introductory stages where the main objective to is create awareness amongst the masses so that a purchase decision can be formed. Amongst the lot, Honda; one of the most remarkable auto manufacturers, has shown its presence; it has started designing new car designs with hybrid engines so as to produce highly fuel efficient cars.

Honda has launched its golden model Civic in the new Hybrid design. Civic has been a symbol of luxury, style, comfort and performance. Civic Hybrids have followed the same legacy with additional features like high gas efficiency and environmental friendliness. The sophisticated engine is installed with a technology which has a characteristic feature of partial zero emission. This feature enables the car to emit less pollutants in the car, therefore, it becomes an environment friendly vehicle. The built in battery pack and 8year/mile guarantee makes it a promising and a reliable option to choose. Therefore, Honda Civic Hybrids are not only an impressive choice for its owner, but also for the society,

Honda Accord Hybrid is a hybrid mannequin which is a high end luxury car. It is a four-door sedan which has high fuel efficiency. The car has V6 motor and 253 horsepower engine. The engine has been designed in a way that it lets the car use less gas, which is not only a monetary gain, but also a performance plus point. Hence, if in future, you plan to buy a hybrid car, Honda should be your top priority.

It will not be unwise to conclude that Honda will be able to prove its worth in the hybrid car category in a lot more impressive and effective manners as compared to other brands.

Motorcycle Clubs The True Mindset

March 15th, 2010 No comments

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2010/03/LJJames2.jpg] This Month I want to talk about the Brotherhood mentality verses the gang mentality in the Motorcycle Club world . Now for those of you who may be asking what is the difference? I will set up a scene to help give you an idea! At a small Bar a member of a Motorcycle Club walks in he sees four Bikers playing pool, He can tell they are a bit nervous, They see his patches and they know who he is with. Now how does he act? Does he walk over to the pool table knock the 8 ball in the pocket say games over and tell one of them to buy him a beer or does he walk over introduce himself and let them know when they are done shooting pool they are welcome to stop over at the bar and have a beer and talk with him! One is the gang way of thinking the other is the Brotherhood way of thinking! I really don’t think I need to tell you which is which!

Now one thing everyone needs to remember is all of the original Motorcycle Clubs Started out with the idea of being a tight nit group of Brothers and just about all of these Motorcycle Clubs got along. Don’t forget many of the men who started the first MCs where returning home after serving their country during times of war. They where looking for that feeling of Brotherhood here at home that they had been left behind. These where good men seeking adventure, looking to ride their Motorcycles and have a good time with others like themselves. Today most Motorcycle Clubs have gone back to that way of Club thinking, There are very few Clubs that still have the Gang Mentality that was seen mostly during the 70′s threw 90′s. During the late 90′s things had just gotten too far out of hand and most Motorcycle Clubs began to realize the Gang Mentality was not the way it was meant to be and it was not the way they wanted it to be anymore, This was not what the Clubs where started for ! Many Clubs who had been friends where now fighting with each other. No one wanted to wear club support gear and things where just not fun anymore. These MC’s had all started their Clubs with the same ideals and ways of thinking, How and why had they grown so far apart that they now hated each other!

Well the answer to how is during the 50′s and 60′s the golden age of the Brotherhood years of Motorcycling the Motorcycle Clubs where really huge. During this great time many of the Biker Movies that came out showed Motorcycle Club Members as Bullies and thugs. The Bikers in these movies would pick on those weaker then them, take over small towns and the Clubs in these Movies all fought each other just like the street gangs of the time! So of course over time many new Bikers came to believe that this was the way it was. So when New Clubs started this was how they would act and the Original Motorcycle Clubs now had members who where young kids looking to prove how tough they where by starting fights with each other. The Original Motorcycle Club Members had been threw wars together and they where as hard as nails they had nothing to prove to no one, But these younger members felt that they did and would imitate the Biker Clubs from the Movies they had scene and soon it was Biker against Biker, Brother against Brother, MC against MC. This began the Dark age of the Motorcycle Gang Mentality years.

Now for the question Why did this Happen? Well When something Changes the way of thinking and being of Groups like the Motorcycle Clubs so far from their original ideals, You have to ask was it just an accident these movies did this? Or is there more to it? Was there a plan behind it? Is there someone or some group out there that would benefit from having these large groups of Motorcycle Clubs who are run in a very military fashion and are made up of many ex-Military Members fighting against each other? If these Clubs all got along and worked together the world could be a very Different place! Are there people out there who are afraid of this happening?

Today there are very few Clubs left that have the Gang Mentality most have gone back to the Brotherhood way and the word Gang in the Motorcycle Club world has become almost the equivalent of a racial slur. Now as Motorcycle Clubs are beginning to go back to the way it was at the start and trying to put the past behind them, I am noticing that there are more and more Biker movies and TV shows Coming out. Will these shows show MC’s in a good way? Will they go out of their way to stir up the quarrels of the past? Will they show us as mindless Bullies much as the Movie Wild Hogs did? Most Important will we let them influence how we really are? Or have we learned from our past? If all continues to go well we could soon be making are way into the second Gold age of Motorcycle Club Brotherhood back to where it all began!!!

What You Should Know About Buying A Used Car From The U.S. And Importing To Canada

March 11th, 2010 No comments

Every year, there are many Canadians who purchase used cars from the United States. The reasons Canadians buy a used car from the US can include: they found a car at a cheaper price, they located a specialty car that cannot be found in Canada, or they are buying a used car from a private seller. If you are planning to buy a used car from the US and bring it to Canada, it is important to understand what the process involves so you do not get held up at the border crossing.

Used cars that are at least 15 years old are allowed to be imported from the U.S. without having to be checked to see if they meet Canada’s emission and safety standards. The age of the vehicle is determined from the month the vehicle was built. Transport Canada’s Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program is responsible for making sure all imported vehicles meet Canada’s safety standards. Used cars, such as used Hondas that are imported from the US are normally carried by a flat bed truck or driven across the border. Once you have purchased the car, you have to go to that particular state’s Department of Motor Vehicle office to acquire that state’s title. On the state’s motor vehicle department website, you will find the information on how to get temporary registration for the car. Remember, before you can travel with the vehicle, you will need to provide proof of insurance because it is illegal to drive in the US without auto insurance.

To be permitted entry into Canada with a used car, you will need the copy of the vehicle’s foreign registration document. This document provides information about the county of export and the age of the vehicle. You should also have a bill of sale that details information about the vehicle such as the vehicle identification number, make, year, and model, the names and addresses of the seller and purchaser and how much you paid for the used car.

When arriving at the border, a customs official will enter the car’s data into the RIV program. There will be a registration fee of $182.00, except for Quebec, which is $197.00. If the car has to be brought up to Canadian standards, you will have 45 days to do so. You won’t be able to register and license the car in Canada until it is modified and inspected. When you have met all of the import criteria, customs will provide you with a Vehicle Import Form, which is given to your province’s licensing officials. Once the used car meets the standards and passes inspection, you can then get the car registered. As well, you will be responsible for such fees as provincial sales tax on the amount you paid for the vehicle and registration fees.

When buying a car from the US to bring to Canada, it is important to remember that you will not be able to secure leasing or a financing plan, or qualify for any rebates. When purchasing a used car from the US instead of Canada, you have to be aware of the extra fees associated with the import. As with any purchase, always do your research so you do not end up having your car denied access at the Canadian border.

Your car dealership offers a diverse selection of high-quality vehicles, including used cars, trucks, SUVs, minivans, and commercial cars. Choose your dream automobile from both new and honda dealership Toronto to satisfy your driving needs.

How Do You Learn What Its Really Means To Be In A Motorcycle Club!

January 29th, 2010 No comments

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2010/01/LJJames8.jpg] I want to address a question I have gotten a lot recently. (I am sure it has a lot to do with the hit show Sons of Anarchy) It is from people who want to start new Motorcycle Clubs. They want to know if they should go to the predominate MCs in their area to talk about starting a new MC first. Many have said to me they do not understand the reason why they should go talk to them! Some have even gone as far as to say that if they have to go to the predominate MC in their area and ask permission that just proves that MC is a Criminal Gang! Not sure how they came to that conclusion but they are some very strong words sent over the computer.

I want everyone to remember I am writing this info as a guideline to those who are looking to get into the MC world and individual results may vary. This maybe some new fad to you but to true Motorcycle Club Members this world is everything!

For my answer to this Question I am going to put aside any statements of having to ask permission of the MCs in your area first. I am going to instead ask why would you not speak to the MCs in your area and get their Blessing first before starting a new Motorcycle Club. Many say it’s because they are going to start a different type of Motorcycle Club. They may even be calling themselves something different like a Riding Club or a Motorcycle Association. Are your Members going to ride Motorcycles and have patches on their vests? If the answer is yes, Then again why not go speak to those who have come before you and paved the roads you now wish to ride down!

For many I know the reason they don’t want to ask is simple fear! Fear of what they do not know or what they think they do know. If it is fear, then it is because you do not know the real Motorcycle Club world! Now every Motorcycle Club in the world is different. But most Motorcycle Clubs don’t mind helping to get a new MC started and teach them what it really means to be in a Motorcycle Club, I can guarantee you it is something you will not learn on TV no matter how many episodes you may watch!

Now if you have decided that what you really want is to start up a new Motorcycle Club, One thing I want to make sure you know is something every Father should have taught his Son as a Child and that is “Do not lie and Always do what you say you are going to do” One fact I will also give you is the MC world is all about Respect! If you just start up a new MC without talking to the other clubs in your area that will most likely be seen as disrespectful!

Let’s think about some other reasons you would want to talk to the MCs in your area first. You are going to want to make sure your new Patch or MC name is not similar to another Motorcycle Club. Many MCs have worked hard over the years to create a name and image for themselves. They will not like the idea of you either using a name close to theirs or wearing a patch that looks like theirs. The reason being is a simple one, They do not want you being mistaken for them doing anything that would make them look bad. You also could be seen as trying to ride on their coat tails by using the reputation they have worked hard for. You may not understand it now but the MC world is a Brotherhood and if you are fortunate enough to be welcomed into it, You will understand after years of working hard creating a name for your MC. The bottom line is meeting with the MCs in your area and talking with them before starting a new MC is the right thing to do!

Another fear many have is they wrongly believe they will be forced to do things for these other MC’s. The only thing most Clubs may ask of you is to come to a few of their events each year have fun and again to show Respect!!!

Now I have heard complaints from many that there are areas where the MCs have decided they do not want any more new MCs! Well all I can do is guess why that might be! The reason I would think that Motorcycle Clubs would say no more Clubs in an area is that there are already a lot of different MCs in that area and they all get along real well. These MCs would not want anything new coming in and messing up the harmony they have created.

Now like I said before the reason most say they want to start a new MC is because they want to start something different then what is in that area. Well often that is not the truth. The real reason People usually want to start a new MC is because they do not want to have to Prospect! If the only reason you want to start a new MC is because you are not willing to prospect, My best advice to you is to stay an independent rider because you will not last long in the Motorcycle Club world anyway!

Long Islands Biker Embarrassment

January 18th, 2010 No comments

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2010/02/LJJames2.jpg] A few weeks back I received an email from a girl Kim about a Charity Motorcycle event she was working on for Bide A Wee an Animal shelter I worked at when I was younger. As I read the info I was looking forward to attending the event only to find it was being held at Jugs and Strokers the only “Biker Bar” on Long Island that does not allow Motorcycle Club Colors. I was pissed to find out I would not be welcome at this event. I then saw the email had been sent out to many other Motorcycle Clubs on Long Island. Pissed Off, I started writing a reply to the email and sent it out to the MC’s here on Long Island. Here is what I wrote.

Hey everyone this is LJ James.

You may not know this but I worked at Bide A Wee in Wantagh for many years. I have some great memories of my time working there. As much as I love the place and think Bide A Wee to be a truly great organization, I will not take off my Colors to go inside Jugs & Strokers to attend this event.

I see this email is addressed to many different Clubs. Some of your beliefs may be different then mine and you may take your Colors off to attend this event. I would hope all of you have more respect for your Club then to do that, but these are my beliefs and may not be yours.

I think it is only fair to Kim who is working very hard for this very worthy cause that she know what your feelings are about the Jugs and Strokers policy in regards to Colors. Kim has spent a lot of time working on this event and I would hate to see her event fail because she is unaware of the Revulsion Jugs and Strokers has towards Motorcycle Clubs!!!

Not only is it an old out dated Policy that promotes the Division of Motorcycle Riders, it is also illegal according to NY State Law! I have been working hard to protect and promote Motorcycle Rights and Unity here in NY and world wide. I think it is time We started working hard to change what is wrong here on Long Island! There is an old saying, “if you want to fix the world start in your own back yard”.

This is an event that, when I heard about it I wanted to attend. Then I hear it is being held at Jugs and now I am “not allowed to attend”.

I am not a bad guy! You all out there know me. How many of your events have I covered in Magazines? How many of you have I DJed for? Not only your Club events but many of your personal family events! I’ve even preformed wedding ceremonies for a few of you and after I married you I Djed your wedding!!!

You too are also all good people. Your MCs have done many things to make Long Island a better place. You have fed the Hungry, Clothed the poor, and made sure every Child on Long Island had a Toy for the Holidays. Our patches stand for what is great about America! Why should we be made to feel that wearing our Colors is even the slightest bit wrong?

If you ask Jugs and Strokers, they might try to use the excuse “well its not your group its other groups who are the bad guys”. That is a cop out, a lie, and an attempt to divide the Long Island Motorcycle Club world!!!

Over the past few years here on Long Island we have seen a Unity in the Motorcycle Club World that many still can not believe. Sport Bike Clubs and Cruiser Clubs riding and hanging together. AMA Clubs and 1% Clubs attend each others events. Law Enforcement Clubs and Outlaw Clubs Breaking Bread and Drinking together at events. I have seen every type of rider hanging out together. This is the Biker dream people!!!

There was a time when we were all told that you could not have a bar on Long Island where all MCs where aloud to mingle together. That there would be nothing but fights and problems. Then JDs Place opened and shortly after that, the Myth was put to rest.

The Motorcycle World here on Long Island has become something We are all very proud of. I call out to all of you MCs, independents, and MROs like ABATE, it is time to end the humiliating practice that Jugs and Strokers has been aloud to inflict upon the Long Island Motorcycle World for far too long!!!

I am tired of this bar being allowed to claim it is a biker bar for bikers, but if your a member of a Motorcycle Club and wear your Colors, you are some how an undesirable, and unwelcome. I say time is up, Jugs and Stokers! You have made enough money off the Long Island Motorcycle world! You need to stop being part of the Problem and become part of the Solution!!!

I’m interested to know what the feelings are of the rest of you!!!

(Because of this reply, Shortly after I wrote this the event was switched to another Long Island Biker Bar “Sick Moon Saloon” That welcomes all who Ride)

Discrimination On The Basis Of Clothing Or Club Membership Is ILLEGAL Article I, Section 11 of the New York State Constitution states “that no person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws of this state or any subdivision thereof.” Article 4, Section 40 of the Civil Rights Law provides that “all persons within the jurisdiction of this state shall be entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities and privileges of any places of public accommodations, resort or amusement subject only to the conditions and limitations established by law and applicable alike to all persons.” The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that individuals have the constitutional right under the First Amendment to wear clothing which displays writing or designs. Cohen v. California, 403 US 15 (1971). In addition, the right of an individual to freedom of association has long been recognized and protected by the United States Supreme Court. Thus, a person’s right to wear the clothing of his choice, as well as his right to belong to any club or organization his choice is constitutionally protected, and persons or establishments who discriminate on the basis of clothing or club membership are subject to a lawsuit.

Simple Tips To Save On Gas

January 2nd, 2010 No comments

Gas caps are a vital part of a car’s constitution that are often taken for granted by car drivers. The department of energy reveals that seventeen percent of cars that are on the road have ill fitting gas caps. A poorly fitted gas cap can cost you gas loss and sabotage your attempts to save gas.

You can save an average of 23% on gas if you drive within the speed limits. When you use your overdrive gears in climbing hills on the road, you save gas. One road habit that wastes gas more than others is the habit of idling. Try to avoid these and other reckless driving habits and you will save more gas at the end of the day.

More and more employers are giving their workers an opportunity to telecommunicate in a bid to save gas. If you want to save gas, you can talk to your boss about working from home. The internet is teeming with jobs for those car drivers who are eager to save gas. But of course, you won’t know if you don’t search.

Pressing down too hard on your brakes can cause them to wear and tear over a period of time. A pair of worn out brakes cannot help you save gas. Keeping moderate speed limits enables you to avoid pressing down too hard on your brakes and allows you to save on gas.

A very good way to save gas is to maintain a driving pace that is set within legal driving limits. I was very surprised to find out how much I saved in just 3 months when I adhered to this simple gas saving tip.

You can save on gas by purchasing gas only when it is cheap. More often than not, gas prices are cheap on some days and exorbitant on others. Keeping a close eye on the trend of gas prices can help you buy gas only when it is cheap.

Gas rebate credit cards can help you save gas. In your selection of a gas rebate credit card, the APR should be your main concern. It won’t do you good to be in debt on your gas credit card because that means that you get to save absolutely nothing on your gas purchases. To avoid a situation where you will be plunged into gas credit card debt, always be regular with your payments.

You can walk instead of using your car all the time in order to save gas. As an alternative to using your car, walking comes with tremendous health benefits such as the loss of extra fat, leaner muscles and a healthier heart. Walking to closeer destinations instead of driving can keep the gas in your car much longer.

Saving Gas The Plain Simple Truth

December 30th, 2009 No comments

Having your tire pressures checked is a brilliant idea on how to save gas when you drive. You don’t have to do it every day, but once a week is good enough, provided the tires are in good working condition, you will not be wasting money doing it. At least, you certainly aren’t spending as much inflating the tires are you would on gas when you have to refill do often.

I hear there are electric cars out in the market already. I personally read an extract last year in which Honda committed to flooding the market with this great new product. Great. As yet they may be too expensive for the likes of you and I to purchase, but not for too long. Get one when the time and tide are right, and save yourself the cost of gas from now till whenever.

When you don’t understand your vehicle very well, you tend to push the poor thing too hard. When you start to look to save gas, you had better work on a better relationship with your car. Learn to listen to how it responds to your touch so that you know when to feed it more gas and when to let up. Ultimately, you are saving gas as you need to.

Smaller cars tend to burn less gas because they don’t work as much to get about as the big cars have to. If you can manage it, you could try using smaller cars and save yourself the extra cost of keeping the bigger one on the road. Use the large vehicles only when you absolutely have to. It only makes sense, and you know it.

If you are not actually using them, lose whatever extra pounds your car may be packing. You could have some stuff in the trunk that you really do not use, and you could be carrying things on the roof of the car that need not be there. All that extra load is burning gas in a way you don’t want. You can do better without them.

Biker Brotherhood And Fatherhood

December 29th, 2009 No comments

Many of you out there probably do not know that I L.J. James am the Son of Pappy (Freelance writer on the Biker Lifestyle) ! Hell I didn’t know till 1986,Well I knew I just didn’t know him! Pappy an my Mother got separated when I was young and I didn’t see Pappy from around 76 till 86. When I met him he wasn’t even known as Pappy yet! That came later.

I had lived with my Mother an step-Father on Long Island in NY till the Summer of 86. I had always been into Bikes and the life style. Many times after getting into some kind of trouble I would hear the saying “He is just like his Father”. Little did I know at the time just how true it really was! After getting into some more teenage trouble (you know the deal Drinking,Staying out late, getting brought home by the cops 2 or 3 times). My Mother figured it was time for me to meet my Father. So in the Summer of 86 at the age of 15, I found myself flying up to Rochester NY to meet my Father! [I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2009/12/LJJames5.jpg]

When I first met Pappy He owned a large House and He rented out rooms in the house to College kids and other Bikers. Almost as soon as I got there Pappy started teaching me to Ride a Motorcycle and probably just as important if not more, what the words Respect, Honesty , Loyalty and Brotherhood mean in the Biker World. I still remember clearly one time at a John Fogarty Concert. Me, Pappy and a few other Bikers where in the parking lot looking at Motorcycles. I saw this really cool bike with this paint job that was just unbelievable, I went to touch it and Pappy grabbed my hand looked at me in the eyes and told me “Never touch another mans Bike without his permission” and till this day I never have.

The House Pappy owend was well known by many of the Bikers in the area and was the place many large party’s where held, It was not uncommon to find a bunch of Bikers sleeping in the living room any given morning. These Bikers where family to me and when they said “He is just like his Father” it gave me a feeling of over whelming pride! I have always loved hearing the stories these true Brothers of the biker world would tell me. I feel the old Biker stories need to be saved and told over and over again.

New Motorcycle Riders are learning about Biker history from old 1960′s Biker Gang movies that have no historic truth to them. Just like with any culture if you lose your true history you lose what you really are! I feel the only way to return the Biker world to its true origin is to keep the old stories alive ! Too many “Bikers” complain that the younger Motorcycle Riders of today have no idea what it means to be a Biker! Well I think maybe the problem is that some of the older Bikers never really knew what it meant to be a Biker, Because if they did they would know its their job to teach the next generation! A new Motorcycle Rider must know what the Spirit of Biker Brotherhood is before he can truly feel it and become a part of it. (Maybe that’s part of why I became a writer?)

I said at the Beginning of this story Pappy was not yet known as Pappy and I would tell you how that came to be. Well if you remember the Summer of 86 you will remember the Karate Kid Movie was a Big Hit and was on HBO like 10 times a day,Well as far as I could remember I had never called anyone Dad or Father or anything like that. In the Karate Kid they called each other miyagi san and Daniel san! Well thinking I was clever I started calling my Father “Pappy san”, He in turn started calling me Son of Pappy and soon after everyone started calling Him Pappy!

Now many of You maybe wondering why the Hell am I telling you all this. Well like I have said there are many Motorcycle riders these days that have no clue what Biker Brotherhood really is. I think it is important that they know this is not something you buy into, But something you grow into. Too many buy a Motorcycle and then do nothing but talk, They are only there for you if you have something to offer them. There are very few true Bikers left, Bikers are being replaced by Motorcycle enthusiasts and part of it is our own fault! I write this story in hopes it will help spread the word that only the true old School bikers can teach the younger generation the true meaning of Biker Brotherhood. [I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2009/12/LJJames6.jpg]

rue Biker who feels the Brotherhood Spirit always has some older Biker to thank for passing that Spirit onto him! I thank my Father Pappy, My Uncle Trey and all the other Bikers Who helped to raise me to be the Biker I am, I am very glad to have been raised by them and I am very Proud to have grown up to be one of them !

A Small Sense Of Freedom

December 29th, 2009 No comments

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2009/12/LJJames2.jpg] Whenever a person or group of people try to live their lives free, those who are stuck in unhappy lives will be jealous. Some people have a hard time letting go, freeing themselves from the day to day trials and tribulations of everyday life even for a little while. Others seek an escape from the stress and anxiety often associated with modern day life.

I guess for me, that’s part of why I am a Biker. There is something about riding a bike that inspires a sense of freedom in me. The open road, the wind in my face, the smells, getting back to nature, the power of my bike. It’s all these things and more that make me feel free. It’s unfortunate that there are some people who, for whatever reason, can’t find something or someway to let go and experience the sense of freedom that we do. These people, for whatever reason, are the ones who point to us and call us rogues or rebels. They say that what we are doing is wrong and that our culture is a “disruptive influence.”

As Bikers, we live our lives a little differently. We work and have responsibilities, but we still know the feeling of freedom. Maybe its because we smile just a bit more and are a bit more relaxed that turns these people green with envy?

A person who works hard and has no free time sees a person on the road riding his or her motorcycle and thinks “I wish that was me!” The thought of being free doesn’t leave their mind. They long for it. They crave it badly! How many of you out their have had a friend tell you how they have always wanted to buy a Motorcycle and just go out riding? How many of them ever actually do?

Here is a typical story : A man is driving home from work when he see’s a group of motorcycle riders pull up next to him. He looks at this group of people riding together having a great time, He starts to think, “I wish that was me”. He then decides, “I’m going to buy a Motorcycle!” He starts thinking about riding. How great it will be to have his wife on the back of his bike and the wind in his face. We could ride up to the lake or maybe that little motel way up in the Mountains. Thinking of the great times he will have he starts to feel that small sense of freedom. He thinks “This must be what those Biker get to feel, Wow!”

He turns into the driveway, parks his truck and rushes into the house to tell his wife about his fantastic idea. “Hi honey, I’m going to buy a Motorcycle.” His wife looks at him and says “What? Did you get overwhelmed by the fumes at work again?” “You can’t ride a Motorcycle. The man answers back, “I’ll learn!”

“You must be crazy”, she says. “Those things are death traps! You will kill yourself and we can’t afford it!” “Honey this is something I really want” replies the man. “NO NO NO!!! I won’t have one of those things in my house! What kind of message would it send to the kids, our neighbors?”

They argue about it, but it the end, the man never gets his motorcycle. He never goes to the lake with his wife or takes that trip up to the little motel in the mountains. He never feels the real sense of freedom one can only get when taking a long trip on a motorcycle. He spends the rest of his life wishing he had never seen that group of Motorcycles. He is angry and bitter.

Now when he see’s Bikers he puts them down. He hates Bikers, not because of who or what they are, but because of what he can never be. He hates them because of what they represent. They represent a kind of freedom, sense of belonging, a oneness with nature and the world that he longs for, he craves, but can never have.

We live here in America, the home of the free, but many are not free. They have never experienced the sense of freedom that can only be experienced on two wheels and, for whatever reason, never will. They live boring, uneventful. “safe” lives and complain about those who don’t.

Don’t hate these envious people, pity them for they will never know the sense of freedom and brotherhood we get from riding with a group of our Bro’s. They’ll never know the wind in their face, the feeling of peace and oneness with nature we feel as we ride threw the country side or down a long lonely highway. They’ll never know the clarity of mind that comes from a long ride alone or the closeness and bond of a long ride or weekend away with someone special. Just thank your higher power that you’ve found a way to escape, a way to be free, even if for some it’s just on the weekends.

Ride Safe and Ride Free because when it all come down to it, this is all about the Ride!

Best Biker Bar

December 25th, 2009 No comments

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2010/01/LJJames2.jpg] In the Heart of the New York Catskill Mountains, there is a place called Nicks Waterfall House. I have been there many times and it has become one of my favorite places of all time to ride to.

There are times when the stress of our lives and jobs can get even the best of us a little down. If you are a straight lace citizen you go to a Doctor and get some pills or maybe see a shrink. If you are a Biker you hop on your Motorcycle get the motor running and you head out to a place like Nicks Waterfall House.

It does not matter where you are or what direction you come from. The ride threw the NY Catskill Mountains is going to relax the stress away from the depths of your very soul. As you ride to Nick’s threw long winding roads up over and into the heart of some of the worlds most majestic Mountains, with the Sun shining down on you and the fresh Mountain air filling your lungs you will start to get a feeling of what one can only describe as pure joy.

As you get near Nicks Waterfall House located on Route 990v, Gilboa New York 12076, either alone or with a group of friends. You will feel as if time and space are no longer a factor in the Universe, and it only gets better from there! As you ride in the first thing many think is they have reached some old time lost resort, but have no fear Nicks is a Biker bar.

When you walk threw the front door you will no longer have any doubts you have arrived at the right place. If Nick is not there to great you himself, there is a good chance he is in his large kitchen cooking up some classic Biker grub. I recommend the first thing you do is order an Ice Cold Beer and go sit by the large windows over looking a Waterfall that looks as if it was stolen from the year–92. If there is any stress or negative emotions left in your body after the ride to the Waterfall House after only a few minutes watching the water fall down and roll over the rocks it will soon have all washed down stream.

Then it is time to meet the locals, grab another Beer and maybe some of that great food (My favorite is the Waterfall House Cheeseburgers) or maybe shoot a game of pool. The crowd at Nicks is a mix of friendly Bikers, locals and good ole boys. This is a place to exchange stories and Adventures from the road. Often the sharing of stories can go on for hours.

It is easy to have what some may call too much fun at Nicks Waterfall House but with rooms up stairs starting at only $25 a night, there is no reason to worry! Now I want to make sure that you know when I tell you there are rooms at Nicks you understand these rooms where created for road weary bikers. If you bring your old lady with you make sure she is a real biker Chick because Nicks is no Yuppie bed and breakfast! It is a real bikers, biker bar and what you get when you rent a room from Nicks is a communal living room a bed to sleep in and a shower to wash off the road dust! One other thing you get from a night at Nicks is a renewed Spirit of Adventure and a willingness to face what ever maybe up around the next bend in your life!

I have many local Bars that I think of as home and I love to go to and cut loose, but when I hear that call of the road it is often telling me it is time to go to Nick’s Waterfall House!!!

For more info or directs call 607-588-9891 and ask for Nick.

New York Motorcycle Club Run

December 19th, 2009 No comments

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2010/01/LJJames8.jpg] Do you remember the Story of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia? Carlie was the little girl from LI NY who while staying with her mother down in FL was kidnapped and murdered on Super Bowl Sunday, 2004. Her abduction was captured on video in front of the car wash where she was Kidnapped by Joseph P. Smith, who has since been found Guilty of first-degree murder, sexual battery and kidnapping.

The story was carried nation wide and was heartbreaking to all who heard it. Now there is an old saying that every dark cloud has a Silver lining and if that is true then the Silver lining here is Matt Barbis, Carlie’s Cousin who started the Rose Brucia Educational Foundation (http://rosebrucia.org) with the Mission of reducing child abductions.

Matt goes around to Schools and preforms Puppet Shows and teaches children how to react and what to do if someone ever tries to adduct them. As you can imagine Matt’s Mission does not come without its costs and the Foundation runs on Donations from Groups,Individuals and Businesses.

Matt who Rides a Motorcycle had seen the good that Bikers on Long Island do to Raise Money for those in need, He wanted to Start a Motorcycle Run to help raise Money for the Foundation. A Motorcycle Run is a lot of work and Matt was Referred to the Mortal Skulls Motorcycle Club (http://Mortalskulls.com) Who do a Run and/or Benefit every year.

When the Mortal Skulls Motorcycle Club heard Matt’s story and what his Mission was they quickly decided that this would be the run and benefit they would be doing for many years to come. What better cause can there be then keeping Children Safe? said one of the Members.

[I:http://autonews.galanter.net/files/2010/01/LJJames7.jpg] For the past 4 years now on a Sunday in June the Mortal Skulls Motorcycle Club have hosted the run and raised money for the foundation. The run starts every year at the Bellmore NY Train station on Sunrise Hwy, with sign up from 10:30am till 12pm, and has ended at local Long Island Bars with live Music, food, Appearances by local New York Celebrities and so much more. The recommended Donation for the event is $10 per person and Run Shirts are available for an additional $10 with every penny of the Proceeds going to the Rose Brucia Educational Foundation. The Mortal Skulls Motorcycle Club Thank all who have come out to help and Support the event every year! This Fundraiser has quickly grown into a huge Long Island NY event, With the continued Support of the Long Island biker world and appearances by Celebrates it will continue to grow for many years to come!!!
