Build a vehicle that has to carry a super-racing car to events all over Europe, and turn it in to the swiftest and the most desirable transporter anyone has ever seen. But what could possibly possess the company to invest vaults of money and countless hours in the design and construction of such a one off commercial carrier? Wasn’t the job possible with just a big van?

The story of creating the transporter has the elements of dignity, perseverance, and practicality. Ahead of the First World War, there had been a bitter rivalry going on between Mercedes Benz and the racing teams of Germany at the time. But Mercedes emerged as the clear winner when the V-12 enthused W-154 bagged 12 of the 17 events that were held before the war. Based on a decision by the management in 1952, Mercedes finally came back to the world of Grand Prix racing in 1954.

To declare its comeback, Benz designed a truck that was specially made to lug around the W-196, a racing car that was to be piloted by a well-known Argentinean racer. The transporter had to look different than any other of its kind while being instantly identifiable on the road as being designed by Mercedes. It had to be the fastest of its kind, as well as one of the fastest on the Western European highways.
