When to Replace your Car’s Cooling System

May 22nd, 2012 No comments

The cooling system is one of the most important components of your vehicle. The water pump will last a while, but won’t last forever. It’s time to replace it when your vehicle’s mileage get to the upper hundred-thousands. What the water pump sends through is the coolant that the system depends on. When the pump stops working, so will your car. How to perform a check on your cooling system:

This is simple. All you need is a very large piece of paper that is white and absorbent and place this under your vehicle while it sits over the night. If the paper is wet in the morning it is a pretty sure sign that he pump is leaking water. Should the liquid on the paper be green, which is a common occurrence, it is a good sign that the coolant is leaking from your water pump.

What do you do if it’s leaking?

Turn the engine off and open the hood. The water pump has a pulley which is a belt that is connected to a round part of the pump. Locate all the belts in the vehicle and you will find more than just the one pulley. The air conditioner and the alternator uses a pulley. If you have power steering and a smog pump they also have pulleys. If you are still unsure about which belongs to the water pump you can always consult with a mechanic and have them show you the right one.

Now that you’ve found the pulley, check if it’s loose. Grasp the pulley at opposing ends and check to see if you can easily move it around by rocking it back and forth. If it has play, you will hear the bearing which is not good. When you’re running your engine it will probably sound like a grinding noise that has a low-pitch.

The water pump is situated in back of the pulley and you can look for a coolant leak. The pump may be working but may need something as simple as a gasket to prevent the leaking. Unless you just replaced it, you may want a new water pump. Other components: The heat of the summer means that your coolant system needs to be working optimally. Preform routine flushes of the radiator. The coolant in the vehicle was not intended to stay in there forever. Repairing damaged radiators is way more expensive than flushing it once a year.

What You Need To Know To Economize

May 20th, 2012 No comments

With gas prices higher than Cheech and Chong and Jeff Spicoli put together, you may have seen some ads promoting products that supposedly save fuel. Yes, we want to improve on fuel efficiency, but are these products really helping? Are they trying to take away more from our automotive budget by exploiting an unpleasant situation?

The truth is, you should be suspicious of any gas-saving claims for certain devices or oil and gas additives. Savings have not been even worth bothering with, for the very few products that have been proven to be effective – albeit, hardly.

You’ll see all sorts of claims and testimonies. They will bend over backwards to tell you how these products can help you save big-time. Yeah, yeah. Actually, the EPA has tested over 100 of these supposed gas saving doo-hickies, and none of them were found to do the job well.

Some of the products can even damage your car. So much for cost savings! Just because a gas saving device is endorsed by some race car driver or movie star doesn’t mean it’ll work for you too – chances are they just did the ad for the extra moolah.

On top of that, these manufacturers have another way of reaching into your wallet. They would sometimes claim that the Federal Government endorses the product. In truth, there’s no such thing. If the seller claims the EPA has evaluated its product, ask for a copy of the report, or check www.epa.gov for information.

Saving gas money is actually best done through common sense. They can do more for you than any product in the market that can’t live up to their outlandish claims anyway.

When filling up, only buy the right octane level gas for your vehicle.

Fast, furious, fuel-inefficient. Keep it smooth and suave.

When driving on the highway, go on overdrive. This can lengthen the life of your engine.

Highway trips are also the best time to use cruise control.

Unless you really have to, avoid braking or accelerating too hard. Tailgating is a no-no. This tip alone can improve your fuel economy by 5 to 10 percent. Abrupt starting and stopping of your car is a real fuel-waster, and a fast way of ruining your carpeting and seating if you’ve got car sick passengers on board.

Don’t leave your car on idle too long.

Avoid carrying excess weight in your trunk.

Give your engine a regular tune-up. A poorly tuned engine or a bad spark plug could lead to increased use of fuel by some 10 to 20 percent at the most.

Your tires have to have enough air and be properly aligned. Check them once a month. Under-inflated tires increases fuel consumption by six percent.

Replace oil and oil filters regularly.

Inspect your air filters and have them replaced if needed. Fuel consumption can be jacked up by some ten percent if the air filters are clogged.

There’s no need to buy products that cost you more money than they save. These little fuel saving tips can add up to an extra hundred bucks or so in your pocket each year!

Suzuki pares back on US operations during slump

May 16th, 2012 No comments

U.S. sales of Suzuki automobiles have been in an extended slump, reports Automotive News. This has prompted the company to cut its promoting budget and to shutter many of its car dealerships. Despite a 13 percent boost in sales across the automotive industry in the first quarter, Suzuki’s numbers have not followed suit.

Suzuki opts out

Compared to its competition, Suzuki is not marketing at all; in fact, many people feel like the automaker has dropped off the face of the earth. In 2009, the business stopped airing national television commercials, and the business does not currently even have a product planning and marketing executive. The former executive, Steve Younan, left the company in January and a replacement does not seem likely any time soon. Suzuki did not show up at the Detroit or LA auto shows, and the company has stopped doing anything with social networking in the last couple of months.

Another sign of trouble for Suzuki came in January, when the car maker stopped receiving consumer satisfaction reports from J.D. Power and Associates. Automakers use the data compiled by J.D. Power to track dealership performance. A memorandum from Suzuki indicated that the automaker will seek a different vendor to provide this data, notes Automotive News. The position has reportedly not been filled yet.

Fewer dealerships

About 12 percent of Suzuki dealerships were taken off the franchise list in 2011, or about 32 dealer franchises. Many sources explained that there have been fewer dealerships each year since 2005.

While American Suzuki will continue to cut programs, Suzuki dealerships feel the financial pain.

Might be good

Near Chicago, Kay owns a bunch of dealerships with a lot of different big brands. Kay believes that poor consumer awareness has caused the troubles at Suzuki.

There is actually a silver lining in cutting the number of U.S. dealerships though, according to the Suzuki Dealership Advisory Board chairman James Morrell.

May 11th, 2012 No comments

Yet, you need also to consider the reputation of your repair shop since there are transmissions repair shops that will just add problem to your car. In this case, it would be a perfect time to withdraw your decision and find something worth your money. Be watchful enough if you think that there are unnecessary things being performed on your transmission.

A lot of technicians are doing some dishonest act and just tell you that it was just a part of their job were in fact they do nothing. This gives you additional burden which is you ought to have. Sometimes because you’re too busy to watch over your transmission while on repair, technicians just take it for granted and they just set it aside until you complain for delays. You should also ask the difference between buying a new transmission for your car versus having it fixed as it is. In some cases, transmission repair is also as good as getting a new one. Yet, this thing about the shop is that they will try to cost you more. You might consider asking an expert about this as well as the age of your car. If your car is older, then you might want to consider buying for new parts to get other years of operation from it.

It is also important to actually select a repair shop that specializes on transmission repair since this requires highly skilled technician which can do better rehabilitation on your transmission. Do not choose a repair shop that performs car repairs in any type of vehicle because they don’t have huge knowledge on transmission repair. Sometimes, they will only give you another problem.

Your New Vehicle May Very Well Choose You

May 3rd, 2012 No comments

Though it shouldn’t necessarily end up being that way, buying a new car can be extremely difficult. You can make your selection from a wide selection of options, so why not make it enjoyable? When you’ve established your budget and know what type of car suits you, you can visit different dealerships and test drive any number of cars. You can easily hear what the different salespeople have to point out, pick out your favorite deals, and then select the best one.

As you test out each car, try to imagine whether or not you can visualize yourself driving it. If your answer is unimpressed, go ahead and test drive additional cars as there’s no reason that you should rush into any sort of a fast decision. If you’re not careful, you may become too preoccupied with particular brand names and not even consider other viable possibilities. It might be a good idea to test drive some autos that are new to you. You might find something new and enjoyable, that ends up being a perfect fit. It might take a bit longer than you would like to find your best car, so try not to be afraid to have a good time during the process.

Go online and check out the dealerships online, to get some different ideas. In all probability, you will discover some car makes and models that will be new to you. You need to use your time and effort online to narrow down the list of cars that you want to look at. You’ll locate a wealth of details about the various cars, including the price structure, so that you can handle pressure from the salespeople when it’s time to buy. Something you’re able to do online is limit your options down to say five cars, then go back to the dealerships with only so many cars to drive. You’re going to now know what each one has, and how much it costs, so you are in position to bargain for the right car.

If perhaps each car is in the same price range, all you need to do is choose the one that feels perfect when you drive it. You shouldn’t get a car that you want to keep for many years and be uncomfortable every time you get in to drive. If you’d like more reviews, then look through the newspaper, or flyers that happen to be advertising different specials on cars for sale. By doing this, should you have more than one car that you prefer, then you can shop around for the one that you can get for the best price.

Sometimes, when you are reading through the ads, you can be pleasantly surprised to find the exact car you’re looking for. At these times, all you should do is, visit the dealership for a test drive, and find out how the car fits. Many times, even though you put a lot of time into researching the ultimate car, your car will actually pick you before you have a chance to pick it.

The Electrical Process Of Your Car Keeps It Operating

April 28th, 2012 No comments

Everyday people drive their car but most have little idea how the car runs. For many of us, it is a difficult task just to have their car go through a routine maintenance. It is simple to have the mindset, out of sight, out of mind, but just because the electrical system is out of sight, isn’t going to mean that it doesn’t need to be maintained.

The electrical system of a automobile is essentially a group of wires. Even so, the big picture is that these wires are important in supplying the electricity the car needs to run. The electrical power system of an automobile isn’t only complex, but also sophisticated, and it includes the battery, starter, voltage regulator, solenoid, generator, and fuse panel. The battery may be the principle element of the car, but others are equally necessary. A 12-volt battery powers each of the electrical requirements of the system.

The generator or alternator continuously energizes the battery power. The alternator is connected with the engine by way of a belt which recharges the battery and keeps the car moving. When you turn the key, electrical power from the battery is sent to the starter in order to start it up. Thus, should you have a dead battery, there is no chance your car will be able to start. That is why the electric battery is such an important part of your car’s overall system. The electric battery moreover powers all the interior features as well like the radio, clock and alarm.

The battery works by having six cells that are split up into negative and positive plates through insulators. A blend of water and sulfuric acid, helps make an electrolyte substance that they are then submerged in. Producing electricity is also created by the alternator, which is needed to run engine controls and other ignition devices. AC power becomes changed into DC power through the belt-driven alternator. The biggest consumer of power is the starter, and without this part working the car wouldn’t start. To send electrical power it is necessary to use the battery, but it is administered by the solenoid, and is operated by the ignition switch. There are actually a great number of things taking place at once with just a simple turn of the key.

All of the electrical parts of the car hooks up to the all-important fuse panel. You will find a great number of fuses that protect your automobile from short circuits and overloads. If you have a concept of the importance of the electrical system and the basics of how it works, it will help when the time comes to have your car repaired.

Advice On Tinting Car Windows

April 27th, 2012 No comments

If you are like most people then you want your car to look its best and that is part of the reason why you put tint on the windows. What most people don’t understand is that you don’t have to be a professional to install tint on your windows, you just have to know what you are doing. Something that I highly recommend is that you don’t just look at tint as a way to make your car look good, it also has other benefits that will greatly help out your car in the long run.

If you are planning on tinting your cars windows then there are some things that you need to be aware of. One of the things that you need to know is that it is harder than just putting some colored film on a piece of glass, there are certain steps that you need to follow. Before you start sticking the tint to the window I just want to give you some tips so that your car looks as good as it can.

Advice On Tinting Car Windows

Precut A Template – The very first thing that I would recommend is that you actually precut a template so that you know the exact size and shape of the glass prior to cutting the actual film. The reason you need to do this is so that you don’t waste the film. If you have never done a car window before then you won’t have the experience you need so make sure that you use the template to get the perfect size and shape that you need.

Clean The Glass – When you are about ready to put the film on the glass then you need to make sure you clean it first. The reason you need to clean the glass is because if you don’t then you will see smudges and dirt underneath the tint even after it has been on for a while. Don’t think that a little bit of dirt won’t hurt because in reality it will.

Wet The Glass – Right before you are going to apply the tint you need to wet the glass with clean water. The reason you do this is so that the film will not adhere to the window before you have positioned it in its final spot and pushed out all the air bubbles.

Whatever you can do to make this entire process much easier on yourself will greatly benefit the way that the film is applied and that is why you need to use these tips. Now I understand that you still might not know what you are doing and that is fine, just make sure you check out a good website or something that will show you how to tint car windows.

The problem that many people have is they don’t know what to do to make their look better but my advice is to simply learn ways to tint car windows and start from there. Now, if you don’t want permanent tint, then you can always resort to car window tint shades.

Top secret identity of the hero Acura NSX

April 23rd, 2012 No comments

Iron Man, Green Arrow, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow are all joining forces for the next Marvel movie, “The Avengers.” Iron Man, who, as all of us know, is actually billionaire playboy Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), lost his Audi R8 in the last “Iron Man” film. But he is not without wheels. He now has an Acura NSX, One like you’ve never seen before. Oh, and it has a secret identity, too.

Seeing the Acura debut

“The Avengers” had its premiere on April 11 at Hollywood’s El Capitan theater. At that event, Robert Downey Jr. drove onto the red carpet in the sleek convertible. Other Acura models, customized for the film, were also used at the premiere to shuttle actors. They contain the tricked-out Acura MDX driven by Avenger’s leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in the movie, also as some Acura TL models.

A relationship

Not astonishingly, the premiere was co-sponsored by Acura.

The Acura was also the official car of last year’s “Captain America” and “Thor” movies. S.H.I.E.L.D. is an acronym for the fictitious Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

Picture and test drive

The “Acura convertible sports car” picture was released by the automaker last week showing what Torque News believed was going to be the 2015 NSX sports car. Inside Line was able to drive the car used in the film though, and they found out a few secrets about the car.

A white semi-trailer delivered Tony Stark’s Acura to the Mojave Desert in California for the Honda test track. This was where the test drive occurred. Inside Line’s John Pearly Huffman explained the car was “Gorgeous. Stop and stare, devastatingly, truly gorgeous,” when the car came out.

It was unnecessary to redo the interior of the automobile considering it is never actually seen in the movie, so it was an untouched inside trim of a 1991 Acura NSX. That was a huge surprise to Huffman.

The car was built by the Trans FX shop in Oxnard, Calif. , with a resin and fiberglass body that fit over the chassis of a 1991 Acura NSX, painted it the same red shade as Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit.

Awesome car, just like Batmobile

Huffman also remarked that the car was in extraordinary condition, calling it “one of the most amazing movie automobiles ever built. It’s right up there with the Batmobile.” Generally, film automobiles are required to perform stunts and do all kinds of strenuous maneuvers. But this time, Stark’s ride doesn’t have to perform any heroics, leaving it with a straight body and a glossy finish.

On May 4, you can go see “The Avengers.”

Proper Care For Your Tires Means Safety And Fuel Savings

April 19th, 2012 No comments

Before going anywhere, you must first check your tires’ condition. If your tires are well-maintained, then it would mean better safety for your car and it will also help it last longer and save money on gas pump.

To have safe travels all year long and keep your tires in good shape, follow these simple tips.

When it comes to tires, choose carefully. Selection of tires should be based on loading and size recommendations of the vehicle. Try asking an expert or automobile dealer when you’re selecting the proper tire for your driving patterns.

Keep a tire gauge handy in your car at all times. That way, you’ll be informed if it’s time to add more air to your tires.

Remember to check the pressure of your tires once a month and especially if you’ve just taken a long trip. Damages that can lead to tire failure are caused by underinflation. On the other hand, overinflation can cause handling and stopping problems as well as uneven wear. As a guide, you can use the manufacturer’s recommended air pressure.

When it’s raining, try to slow down. There’s better traction if your speed decreases because the tire’s footprint, or amount of the tire’s tread contacting the road surface, increases.

For every 6,000 miles, try to rotate your tires. Mechanical problems like imbalance or misalignment should be corrected before rotation, and you can determine this by checking if your tires are showing uneven wear.

Checking your vehicle alignment is another thing you need to remember. If you notice your vehicle pulling to one side, ask an automotive professional to check the alignment.

Your tire tread should also be measured and inspected. You’ll know it’s time to replace your tires if you place a penny in the tread groove and you notice that you can see the top of Lincoln’s head.

The tire sidewalls needs to be checked to make sure that there aren’t any gouges, bulges, or other irregularities.

Excessive heat inside your tires can be caused by overload, so make sure you don’t overload.

Your tire balance is another thing you need to periodically check. Causes of irregular wear include an unbalanced tire and wheel assembly.

Regular checking of your tires would mean keeping your vacation drives safe and enjoyable as well as affordable.

How To Put Humpty-Dumpty Back Together Again

April 6th, 2012 No comments

You’ve just bought an old car with the romantic notion of rebuilding it. It is only when you start trying to buy the right parts for your project that you begin to wonder if you might have made a mistake. A car is only as good as the parts that go into it, it doesn’t matter if you are going to sell it or not. Before starting on a project that you may regret it is important to consider the following tips.

Do you think that cars aren’t all that complicated to understand? Changing parts and rebuilding your car from the ground up are two very different things and require very different abilities. If you are going to commit to this project you will need to be brutally honest about your level of skill and the amount of time and effort you are willing to assign to the project. A snazzy paint job and changing some engine parts can be fun if you if you don’t have the required skill to replace everything. Always think about what you want to put in before you start pulling things out.

It is very tempting to grab the first old banger that you see as soon as you know what type of project you want to do, but it is often better to wait so that you don’t take on something you can’t handle. It is a bad idea to invest in a car that doesn’t have the parts if you have no intention of finding the parts it needs and fitting them. Picking a car solely on the reasons that you love the make and model will spoil your affection for the car if it spends endless amounts of time sitting on your front yard because you don’t have the right parts. Novices should always take a friend who knows a lot about cars, and their parts, with them when deciding what type of car to buy. If you don’t know much about cars you could pick the wrong parts or become subject to a conman who will increase the price of the right parts because you’re not sure what you are doing. The price you are willing to pay for car parts should take into account what you want to do with the end result. If you are just going to use your car for show then an older, slightly worn part will do instead of a brand new part, where as you will need parts of a decent standard if you want to drive the car on a permanent basis.

When picking parts for your restoration project you need to be careful about what you are and are not willing to buy.

Think about what part you are after and don’t be swayed to purchase any other parts because they are on offer. Sometimes waiting is the best and hardest thing you can do, but it will be worth it if you can get the best parts for your car.

Efficient heater and leather come to 2013 Leaf

March 29th, 2012 No comments

Nissan did not get its electric Leaf into showroom in all 50 states until recently. Even so, 9,700 units sold to United States drivers in 2011. The 2013 model, boasting many brand new upgrades, will start production on United States soil, perhaps as soon as December. The Japanese automaker promises to assemble the vehicles in its Smyrna, Tenn. plant.

Responsive to customer feedback

Nissan’s director of product and advanced planning is Mark Perry. He said that there will be some brand new changes to the Leaf depending on customer feedback, according to Detroit News. The heater system will be made more productive and leather upholstery will be added. The interior trim will be darker as well.

Leather for the less ‘green’

The rival Chevrolet Volt has leather available as an option, so Nissan Motors has decided that in 2013, consumers will have that choice also. This is because customers have been requesting the choice. This is regardless of Nissan’s goal to stay green in the Leaf vehicles.

A lot less light

Currently, the Leaf only comes with clean-looking, light-hued plastic interior fixtures. Some consumers have expressed a desire for a darker finish inside. Nissan Motors is providing that as an option, also.

Add miles with better heater

Heaters have been problematic in electric vehicles because they draw so much power and drastically reduce the range of the vehicle. The 2013 Leaf, states the car maker, will feature a new, more productive heating system that could deliver more miles in cold weather.

According to the EPA, the Leaf only has a 75 mile range. This is the case when it is fully charged.

Added heated seats

Nissan seems serious about keeping its customers warm. The car maker added heated seats and steering wheel to the 2012 model, also as a rear climate-vent.

Put together in US

Nissan promises to move a lot of manufacturing for the Leaf to the U.S. fairly soon to be able to increase availability and sales. Currently, it is produced in Oppama, Japan. It is already changing the Smyrna, Tenn., plant in order to prepare it for production. The Decherd, Tenn., plant will make the electric motors by early next year and a nearby facility will make the lithium-ion battery packs.

Start date unknown

Brian Brockman is the Nissan Motors spokesman that could not tell anybody when production is going to begin in the Smyrna plant, according to Motor Trend. The Detroit News estimates that manufacturing will start in early Dec. though.

Your Best Options For Car Relocation

March 28th, 2012 No comments

Car transfer arrangements can keep you from driving long distances when you use a service or individual who is trustworthy. For people who are relocating to another region, this is often the best option, as you can’t fit all of your belongings into your car. It can also be convenient if you’re going on a trip where you want your car but don’t want to drive it all the way to your destination. Following are ideas for car transfer methods made simpler.

If you’re using a moving company, one option for car relocation is to have the moving company move your car. This isn’t always easy, regrettably. An issue is having to rent a bigger vehicle and that is obviously additional money. As moving all of your furniture along with a car is not easy, make sure you deal with experienced and insured movers. It’s essential that the mover you use has insurance that will cover your vehicle, or you’re putting it at great risk. Although this is one option, it is realistic and more safe to use a vehicle relocation company while allowing a mover to transport your other belongings.

As you are preparing your vehicle to be transported, it is important to take out anything that could cause difficulty. The first step is taking all personal items out of your car except the general needs like a tire that is spare and the jack. Make sure the alarm is turned off if you have one so it won’t go off while it is being moved. Before you move your car, make sure you take out any stereo or CD player. In a nutshell, as the vehicle is being transported if there is anything that is valuable or could be easily broken or jostled, remove it prior to the move.

Always check with your insurance carrier if you use a transportation company or are having an individual drive your car to your landing point. You will want to ensure that the car is entirely safeguarded regardless of how you want it transported. If you’re using a transport company, their insurance will usually cover everything, but you should verify this. This is something to look over before you sign a contract. At worst, you may have to buy extra insurance to cover the transport, but it will be worth it so you can have peace of mind about the safety of your vehicle.

If you’re moving or taking a long trip, you have many things to think about, but car relocation is a serious issue so it has to be given plenty of thought. Plenty of transportation companies offer experience and most of the time, problems with experienced companies will be nil. However, it’s still necessary to study the terms carefully and make sure you know what to expect and what the final cost will be.

Valuable Directives For Car Transference

March 26th, 2012 No comments

Sometimes driving conditions are less than welcoming and it could be a safer option to have someone else transfer your car for you. By choosing to have your vehicle delivered, you will have a more pleasurable trip. For your own peace of mind, be sure to select the option that will best suit your particular needs. When looking into transporting your vehicle, check into the many choices and select the one that best fits your needs. As you read on, you will discover a few clues on which process will be the most satisfying.

Sometimes the best way to find a good vehicle relocation service is simply by way of mouth, due to their vast numbers. With out a doubt, you will undoubtedly need to stay clear of seedy business people. By going online to the Better Business Bureau, you can find out if their have ever been complaints on different businesses. Of course negative complaints are a warning, but no info should make you a little wary as well. Finding a competent service with outstanding results over the years is as important as an educating website; and it doesn’t hurt to check out the validity of their businesses physical account.

Searching for special deals would be a good idea when looking into hiring a transport company to relocate your vehicle. Best Car Cleaning Method For A Showroom Look

March 8th, 2012 No comments

It is one thing to drive a brand new hot, gleaming car from the showroom, and another to possess one after it has run over rough roads for thousands of miles.

This lies in washing your car regularly both externally and internally, the best time being in the evening to preclude smears all over the body of the car when the water dries.

Start your car cleaning exercise with regular tap water, making certain to never use a sponge that picks up grit and dirt and transfers it to other parts of the car. A high-pressure hose or hose pipe with a good jet works best to shift the grit and dirt.

Allow the dirt to soak as you work on the car?s interior. Start by picking up paper and car park stickers, then go on to the vacuuming and wiping down the dashboard, console and all the other plastic with a damp rag using mild shampoo for dirty areas. Not using products with silicon avoids a greasy residue.

Making sure the exterior is still wet, use a very soft sponge to gently remove grit particles, making sure to not scour tar or mud deposits.

Begin with the car’s roof, working in circles and finishing off with the dirtiest and most gritty areas – the sills and bumpers. Then begin the pre-wash phase equipped with a bucket of clean water and a car pre-wash that neither bubbles nor foams readily like Autoglym car detergent.

However avoid the use of detergent with built in polish because it makes your job more difficult and the windows hazy. The use of a tar and bug removal spray assists soften persistent stains.

The main wash necessitates the use of a quality car shampoo with a slightly stronger sponge or cotton-washing pad, the procedure being similar to the pre-wash.

The scrub pad removes tough stains on the sills and lower front bumper. Lastly go to work on the wheels and tyres; make sure you wear gloves as you work on washing off dust like brake dust and alloy wheel cleaner and removing solid brake dust containing harsh chemicals.

Next comes rinsing; that is best accomplished with fresh clean water from a watering can. Some people have had excellent result starting with the roof, using two buckets; avoid contaminating the water with grit.

Give your car the regal drying treatment with a somewhat damp chamois leather that works like a wiper blade creating a thin film of water that evaporates easily. Clean and polish the glass with a proper automotive glass cleaner and a bit of washed Hessian cloth.

Polishing is the last step required; use an electronic buffer to cut polishing time. Working in straight lines with one cloth to apply the polish and another to buff it off, you will achieve a showroom finish.

A jet wash could help polish quickly. This is done by adding polish to a liter of water and rubbing it into the paintwork, avoiding the windows. Rinse it off and squirt tap water with a windscreen washer.

Then set the wipers to work fast to dry the windscreen faster. Finally, buff off the damp polish residue with the chamois leather to achieve the showroom shine.

BMW May Put Controls On Smart Fabric

March 4th, 2012 No comments

Smart fabrics, also known as e-textiles, are fabrics woven with digital elements. When the fiber is charged with alternating current, it creates a pad that is sensitive to touches and swipes. By touching a specific section of the seat for example, or maybe by sliding a finger across a line on the upholstery, a driver could conceivably control the music volume, the heat or the air conditioning.

Previous tries at making smart textiles suffered because they could not be cleaned without destroying the functionality of the fabric. Not so with the brand new bolts of smart cloth BMW is looking at. It cleans up like any upholstery and keeps doing its job.

Maksim Skorobogatiy is the Professor who let a team at the Polytechnic School of Montreal, Canada to develop a type of smart fabric that BMW is using. The journal Brand new Scientist published his research. Rehmi Post is the person most associated with the fabric though. He developed “e-broidery” while studying at MIT for a Master of Science.

The technology is not anything new. It is similar to Teflon as it has woven flexible, polymer-based fibers in it, according to CNet. It has been enhanced quite a bit though. Many various touches will get the fabric to respond.

BMW has not issued a timeline as to when the technology may find its way into customer automobiles. However, the New Scientist piece did say that automakers GM and Bombardier are also taking a serious look at the technology.

The music volume might increase too high with just the swipe of a hand. It can also change other things in the car by accident. This is the real issue with the technology that has to be worked out. Anyone with kids needs to be extra cautious with the technology.

Vintage Cars Are Great To Restore And Collect

March 1st, 2012 No comments

There is definitely something appealing about the old cars that you see at vintage car shows, gleaming and purring and so obviously lovingly restored. The appeal for their owners goes much deeper than just a sense of pride in their restoration work though. Most vintage cars hark from an era when cars were only available to the elite in society, and most vintage cars today made a significant impact on society in their heyday. Collectors of vintage cars are just as concerned with their machines’ historical significance as they are with owning and driving the car.

However, the hobby of collecting and restoring vintage cars is quite rare. Being an enthusiast is far from enough – you need to have enough money to buy the vintage car and enough money to work on the restoration, which could be a small fortune depending on the car that strikes your fancy.

Restoring a vintage car is expensive simply because any parts that need to be replaced are nigh impossible to find, and often have to be made specially for the vehicle. Body work has changed somewhat too, and today’s panel beaters do not have the skills or tools required to restore vintage car bodywork.

Judges will consider several things at vintage car shows – including whether the car is in working condition or not, and whether the original parts are there. Vintage car collectors often travel the country (and sometimes the world) to purchase original parts, but this is becoming even more challenging due to the age of the car. Performance can be quite important, especially at vintage car club races. And since these are very valuable investments, vintage cars are a rarity on American roads. Most owners will take their cars out for a weekly trip on a weekend when the roads are not busy, thus avoiding accidents and people getting impatient behind the slower-moving car.

It may cost a fortune at times, but it’s definitely worth it to be at a vintage car show. To see a part of our history, lovingly restored and cared for, is a great experience for young and old. Our kids are sure to be amused to no end at the fact that gadgets are few and far in between, while we would recall our own childhood when leather seating and solid wood paneling was standard for most automobiles. When you visit a vintage car show, remember to marvel over the owner who has spent many hours and a lot of money returning the car to its former beauty.
