When to Replace your Car’s Cooling System
The cooling system is one of the most important components of your vehicle. The water pump will last a while, but won’t last forever. It’s time to replace it when your vehicle’s mileage get to the upper hundred-thousands. What the water pump sends through is the coolant that the system depends on. When the pump stops working, so will your car. How to perform a check on your cooling system:
This is simple. All you need is a very large piece of paper that is white and absorbent and place this under your vehicle while it sits over the night. If the paper is wet in the morning it is a pretty sure sign that he pump is leaking water. Should the liquid on the paper be green, which is a common occurrence, it is a good sign that the coolant is leaking from your water pump.
What do you do if it’s leaking?
Turn the engine off and open the hood. The water pump has a pulley which is a belt that is connected to a round part of the pump. Locate all the belts in the vehicle and you will find more than just the one pulley. The air conditioner and the alternator uses a pulley. If you have power steering and a smog pump they also have pulleys. If you are still unsure about which belongs to the water pump you can always consult with a mechanic and have them show you the right one.
Now that you’ve found the pulley, check if it’s loose. Grasp the pulley at opposing ends and check to see if you can easily move it around by rocking it back and forth. If it has play, you will hear the bearing which is not good. When you’re running your engine it will probably sound like a grinding noise that has a low-pitch.
The water pump is situated in back of the pulley and you can look for a coolant leak. The pump may be working but may need something as simple as a gasket to prevent the leaking. Unless you just replaced it, you may want a new water pump. Other components: The heat of the summer means that your coolant system needs to be working optimally. Preform routine flushes of the radiator. The coolant in the vehicle was not intended to stay in there forever. Repairing damaged radiators is way more expensive than flushing it once a year.
